"You could say that." Gerry looks around the table before settling his gaze back on me. "You understand we need to ask you a few questions before you're allowed to stay?"
I nod even though I sort of feel like I deserve a pass given what's happened to me and the fact that I'm a Hunter.
"Thank you. To start, did you at any time during your stay with the Blood Mafia exchange blood with a vampire?"
My heart thumps against my chest and the hair on the back of my neck stands to attention. "No," I say calmly.
I don't trust these people.
"Hm," is all Gerry says.
Maria and Nicole stay silent. Why aren’t they telling him about the picture they have? They have proof. I don’t have time to worry about their motives because Gerry clears his throat.
"Did you fornicate with any vampires?"
I raise my eyebrows. "Are these standard questions?"
He gives me a tight smile. "Please answer the question."
I look the bastard straight in the eye. "I'd rather stab them than sleep with them."
A partial truth. It's easier to lie if you use the truth to help.
He nods. "I understand the sentiment. Have you ever been with a wolf?"
Releasing a drawn-out sigh, I trace my finger along a grain of wood. "Come on, Gerry. I'm sure you already know the answer to that one."
"Not much gets by you, does it?"
I narrow my eyes. "Obviously you've been watching me. You know I dated a wolf. Is a supernatural dick in a Hunter's vagina a big no-no or what?"
My mother chokes on her own spit, and I lean over to pat her back. She glares at me and Nicole coughs into her hand, covering a laugh.
"There's no need to be vulgar, Demi."
Why does he sound like a disappointed father?
Drumming my hands on the table a few times before I stand, I say, "I think this concludes the interrogation into my sex life. In case you're wondering, I don't have any diseases. Do you have any meaningful questions or do you want to continue wasting my time?"
"Demetria," Maria scolds like a real mom.
I smirk at her. "You know this is ridiculous, Maria. I'll leave if this is truly what's standing in the way of me being welcome. I don't need this shit."
"What will you do when your powers come?" Gerry inquires with a quirked eyebrow.
"Gee, I don't know. Maybe I'll go fuck a fae."
The guy who's been giving me dirty looks since I entered the room points his finger at me. "She doesn't belong here, she doesn't know our way and she's disrespectful."
"With all due respect, Daniel. Go fuck yourself. The only reason I don't know anything about Hunters is because this bitch left me."
Gerry begins to say something in her defense but I raise my hand.
"Can it. Either way you slice it, she left me. What was stopping her from coming to get me once Nix disappeared?"
And that my friends is the million-dollar question. If my mother was so self-sacrificing and loved me so much she gave me up to protect me, why didn't she come back?
No one speaks.
