"You're not stupid, I'll give you that." A ghost of a smile plays on his lips.
Daniel steps forward. "Gerry." He holds out a gun.
Gerry takes the piece and grows serious again. "Death is the penance for letting them feed from you."
"Death? You killing a Hunter, a female one at that, because you think vampires fed from her is a little rash, don't you think? Your numbers are low. Who's going to give you little baby Hunters if you go around killing all the women?"
"Not all of them," Daniel says with a sneer. "Just you."
A bullet clicks into the chamber and Gerry points the gun at me.
"Gerry!"
Maria's voice breaks through the tension. Gerry snaps his head to Daniel.
"I told you to be discrete."
"We were, the bitch fought us harder than we expected."
Gerry backhands him and Daniel's gaze clouds with fury.
“You failed me,” Gerry says, then he lifts the gun and shoots him.
The guys standing behind Daniel shout in surprise and rush for their friend.
Gerry glares at me.
Maria rushes to my side, using a knife to cut my wrists free. "What the hell, Gerry?" There's so much anger in her voice I'm taken aback by it.
"I found Daniel and his friends out here with Demi. I took care of it." He speaks through clenched teeth.
Maria presses my head into her stomach, running her hands over my hair as if to reassure herself I'm not the one who was shot.
Voices fill the night. The gunshot was loud. No trained Hunter would sleep through that.
The guys surrounding Daniel are glaring daggers at Gerry, who stands unaffected by their hate filled gazes.
“He’ll be fine, it’ll take him a while to heal, but he’ll live. Don’t look at me like that,” Gerry says. His voice is matter of fact and filled with zero emotion.
Maria continues to touch me. She's whispering random things to me in a lame attempt to make me feel better.
Her effort is touching, and it's actually the first time I've seen her act like a real mother.
Nicole runs up to us, eyes landing on Daniel's fallen body. She looks to Gerry, me on the ground, Daniel's friends, and Maria who is mid panic attack.
"What happened?"
I listen to Gerry tell his lie once more. Nicole flicks her gaze to me as if wanting to confirm the truth.
His glare burns a hole in me and if it weren't for all the innocent bystanders and the fact that he still has a gun, I would tell her the truth. It's too dangerous right now. He has enough rounds in that clip to do serious damage.
No matter how much I want to shout what he's done, I press my lips together.
When the time is right, he'll pay for this.

The shockof Daniel's temporary death at Gerry's hand ripples through the Hunters. They're confused by the young Hunter's actions and don't understand why he'd attack me.
