Chapter Ten
Mateo
I feel her seconds before Colt and Grayson beat down my door. They feel her too. The weight that has taken residence in my chest is lifted and a new burst of energy fills me. I've found her.
She's around two hours away by car. It's midnight on her birthday. She'll gain her powers at the time she was born; nine-thirty tonight.
I flash out of my chair and to the parking garage. My men join me in my SUV seconds later. Grayson grabbed a few guns from the weapons room and gives one to Colt.
Colt takes it, resting his hand on his leg as his knuckles turn white. "We should flash there."
"Demi can't flash."
He gives me a look that says he doesn't give a shit. "One of us can carry her."
Grayson leans between the seats from his spot in the back. "It would be faster."
"Her body—"
"I don't give a damn!" Colt slams his fist into the dash so hard the airbag pops out. He roars and slashes at the bag with his hands.
Grayson lifts one eyebrow at me and smirks. I don't return his smile. He'll only make Colt angrier. Colt isn't good at dealing with his emotions in rational ways.
"Are you done?"
He lets out a shuddered breath before shoving the white fabric away. "Yes," he spits the word out.
I nod. "Seeing as you destroyed this car and I don't want to pay for two cars to get fixed because you wanted to throw a temper tantrum, we'll flash there."
It'll cut the time in half.
Colt's chest is heaving as he looks through the passenger side window.
"You won't be the one to carry her. You will not touch her until you can control yourself and you prove to me you mean her no harm."
His shoulders bunch at my words, but he knows better than to argue. I understand his frustration. Demi stabbed him in the heart.
To her credit, she didn't decapitate him and burn the body and head in different locations. She could have, but she didn't.
Grayson pats his shoulder. "There, there, champ."
Colt growls and shoves the door open, opting not to use the handle. The door crashes into the next car over and sets off the alarm. Colt's flashes away.
I hop out of the car and point a finger at Grayson when he climbs out. "You're paying for that."
He smirks. "Worth it."
"Don't push him. Not now."
Then I flash away. Grayson's a step behind me and we catch up to Colt in a matter of seconds. When we reach him, he starts to go faster. I match him step for step, racing toward Demetria with a cruel twist of my lips.
Gotcha.
