I smirk. "She'll be fine."

Colt crosses his arms over his chest. Maybe he doesn't agree. He'll come around.

"You better hope so." Nicole presses her lips together. "Goodbye, Demi. Give 'em hell."

Chapter Eleven

Demi

The Jeep's lights fade as Maria speeds away. I watch them go. I was so close to absolute freedom. Mateo steps closer, brushing his front against my back.

"Hello, baby girl."

I shiver and my stomach tightens in anticipation.

Freaking sexy vampires.

They're the worst.

I palm the knife and swing it at Mateo's arm when he threatens to pull me into a hug. Mateo's faster than me and snatches the weapon, tossing it to the ground. His arm clamps around my stomach in an unbreakable hold.

Grayson chuckles. "So you did miss us."

"Nope," I say, popping the P.

Mateo brushes my hair over my shoulder, pressing his lips to the back of my neck. "Liar," he whispers when I gasp in surprise and my thighs clench together.

"I hope you don't expect me to walk to San Francisco." Deflection always works.

"Nope," Grayson mimics me when he says it. Then he flashes in front of me. Mateo releases me, Grayson scoops me up, and starts running with me in his arms.

I've only done this once and it was from Twisted Helix to my apartment. Grayson moves much faster than Colt did that night. When watching the world blur by becomes too much to bear without hurling, I squeeze my eyes shut and bury my face in his neck.

He falters when I move in his hold but recovers quickly, continuing to race toward San Francisco. I can't see Mateo and Colt. They're near enough that I can feel them keeping pace. Grayson may be fast but so are they.

My heart is slamming against my chest.

This was a horrible idea.

God damnit, Maria.

"Easy, tiger. It'll be okay."

Grayson's whispered words of reassurance don't do much to soothe me. Colt wouldn't meet my gaze. I don't blame him for being angry. I fear what his anger will bring, though.

It's not a matter of if he gets me back, it's a matter of when.

I wakewhen Grayson starts to slow down, surprised that I managed to sleep in his arms while I felt nauseous. When we get to the parking garage and Grayson stops in front of the elevator, he gingerly sets me down. I grip his shirt and try not to throw up from the sudden stop.

I realize why cars have shock absorbers. Grayson's pretty good at the whole flashing thing, but I was still jostled about enough to make my stomach uneasy. Combine that with the abrupt stop. Yeah, it's about to be vomit city, population four.

Maybe I can aim it at Mateo.

"Breathe," the vampire says. Speak of the devil.

I release my hold on Grayson, bend over, and place my hands on my thighs. Mateo's shoes come into view.
