Evelyn smirks at me and lets go of my hands. "Actually I do. I have a date."
"At a sex club?" Grayson asks on a laugh, eyeing her outfit.
She scowls at him. "Careful, Gray, I like you but that can change."
He rolls his eyes. "You don't scare me, Evelyn. I know behind that psychotic exterior you're a big softy."
Placing her hand on his arm, she shoves him slightly and chuckles. "You're ridiculous." Facing me again, she tilts her head and sighs. "I'm so happy you're home, the three of them have been unbearable in your absence, love. Do me a favor?"
"Uh, maybe?"
"The next time you stab one of them, don't run. Oh, and good job punching him in the nuts." Evelyn flashes away from the booth.
Grayson and I glance at each other and burst into laughter. Mateo grabs Grayson's Jack and blood and drinks it, staring the other vampire down over the rim.
"What?" Grayson asks. "It's Evelyn."
Mateo slams the glass down. "Let's go before someone else shows up to ruin the night."
Chapter Thirteen
Demi
The alcohol has fully taken effect by the time Mateo leads us to the elevator. Drinking on an empty stomach was probably a bad idea. I haven't eaten since last night at dinner.
"Will you get everything ready for tonight?"
Grayson nods at the boss. "I'm on it."
He flashes away, leaving me alone with the vampire I shouldn't be with. Mateo makes me want to do bad things. Fun things, but bad ones nonetheless.
Tugging on my hand, the tall vampire leads me into the elevator and presses the button for the thirty-sixth floor. His suite.
Fuck.
He hasn't released my fingers, so I pull my hand away and move to the corner of the elevator, taking a moment to breathe without being surrounded by his scent. I'm thankful his power is tucked away because I'd be putty in his palms if he let it out to play.
Shoving his hands into the pockets of his dark slacks, he leans against the wall opposite me. His dark brown eyes are intense and focused, tracing over my face and every reaction I have to his proximity.
"Happy birthday," he says.
I close my eyes. Judas Priest, I forgot it was my birthday. Can you blame me though? Being in their presence is enough to undo any woman.
"Thanks." I sigh and look him over. "What are you going to do to me for stabbing Colt?"
His head connects with the wall of the elevator and he stares down at me. "I'll let Colt figure that out."
I frown. "You're not mad?"
"I didn't say that." He shakes his head. "Colt's been through worse. You've wounded his pride, but he'll come around."
"You say that like I want him to come around."
"Don't you?" he asks, tipping his head to the side.
Do I have words scrawled across my forehead or something? I don't like how he knows what I want without me saying so. It's creepy and concerning because I'll have to be more stealthy than usual.
Stealth is not something I'm good at.
