I look with him, seeing they're all healed and awake. Mateo and Grayson both look put out. Maria and Nicole look downright livid.
"Hi," I say, twinkling my fingers at them. "Sleep well?"
Chapter Seventeen
Mateo
Demi is curled into Colt like he's a fucking blanket and she's two breaths away from freezing to death. I expected her to take out her anger on me once she came into her powers. I didn't anticipate her snapping my neck.
Then again, I should know with Demi there is no predicting how she'll go.
She detaches from Colt and walks over to Nicole, looking somewhat bashful but still wearing a little grin.
"I'm sorry, Nicole. Of all the people here, you didn't deserve that."
Nicole's wearing a look that could melt ice, but it has no effect on Demi. "Apology accepted."
Demi starts to speak, but Nicole continues before she can.
"You should know the next time won't be so easy. You're stronger now, but once your powers settle, you'll have to work hard to best me or your mother. We've had years of training."
The smile leaves the little Hunter's lips and she nods. Nicole managed to slap her sober with her words. I wish I had that impact on her, it'd save me a lot of grief.
I have a plan to fix that.
"I'll train hard."
Respect is something I've never seen Demi show, but the way she's looking at Nicole resembles the emotion.
Nicole opens her arms and Demi accepts the hug. "I know you will. Give them hell, Demi."
She laughs. "Why does everyone keep telling me that?"
"Probably because they deserve it," Evelyn mutters as she sashays over.
It didn't escape my notice she was left unharmed. I’m not sure if I should be offended or happy she didn’t hurt Demi. Then again, she only threatened violence if the Hunter stabbed me. Snapping my neck is an entirely different affair. Still, Evelyn must really like her to let something like this slide without retaliation.
It seems Demetria likes my sister as well. Perhaps I can leverage that relationship to my advantage. I don't like losing.
Not even to Colt and Grayson.
What can I say? I'm a poor sport and I plan to win Demi's heart first.

Demi
Nicole and Maria leave a little while after I apologize to Nicole. Her words stick in my head and I mull over them as I lie in bed.
Train hard.
My strength can't overpower years of training.
She's right. I know that from my martial arts, but those lessons have nothing on the type of training I need to do. I learned that at the complex when I met Mack and saw what he was teaching his students. Grayson and Colt can teach me weapons, I'm sure of it. The only thing I'm not sure how to learn without going off to hunt something is how to kill.
Not temporarily like I did tonight.
The wolf I killed in the alleyway was a happy accident.
