Interesting. I figured he'd give her a hard time or try to fight with her. I guess Alissa's higher in the ranks than he is. She did say she trains the new recruits. Maybe she trains the seasoned ones as well?

"So, Liss Liss, here's what I was thinking." I grab her arm and yank it behind her back. She doesn't miss a beat and spins under my hold, slapping her palm against my wrist. "We should fight."

Alissa throws her head back and laughs. "You're crazy, you know that?"

My face hurts from smiling so much. "Everyone's crazy, Alissa. Some people are just better at hiding it."

"Preach," she says, raising her hand above her and waving it around.

"Let's go." I use my supe speed to run to the fighting ring.

She's a beat behind me. "I can't wait to kick your ass."

I snort. "Haven't you heard? I've come into my powers."

Alissa gives me a once over. "Yeah? Well, let's see what you got, bitch."

Challenge accepted.

Chapter Eighteen

Demi

I slam Alissa into the ground for the seventeenth time. It's almost too easy. She's fast and has landed a few hits, but I've sparred with her plenty of times. I know what to expect. She's let loose and stopped pulling her punches, but her style is still the same.

"Shit," she says on a wheeze. My hand is still around her throat, not hard enough to hurt her, and she's stuck under me. "I need to work harder."

"My powers are still settling," I remind her. "We'll see how it goes in a few days. Who knows, maybe you'll kick my ass once they level out."

Her lips pull into a doubtful frown. I release my hold and stand, offering her my hand. She slaps her palm in mine and I pull her up. Her eyes catch on something over my shoulder.

"Demi, Mateo's here."

Of course he is.

"Wonderful. Maybe he's ready for an ass kicking." I turn around and see Mateo standing at the head of twenty vampires. His arms are crossed over his impressive chest and his dark eyes trace over my body. I keep my shoulders pulled back and raise my chin. "Enjoying the show?"

A hint of a smile plays on his lips. "Very much so. I wonder, though, how you'd do against a squadron." He lifts his hand and points at me. "Attack."

Motherfucker.

The vampires behind him rush toward us. They're flashing, I'm sure, but the movements are all in slow motion again.

Alissa inches away. "Listen, I'd love to help you, but I'm not trying to get killed."

I shoot her an annoyed look. "Traitor," I whisper.

Her face falls and she looks between me and the vampires. "Demi—"

I wave my hand. "I'm joking. I don't expect you to defy your boss for me."

Turning around to focus, I flick my gaze over the enemy. They're coming in from all sides except behind me. I run and jump, pushing off the ropes and propelling myself back. I flip and land on the mats outside the ring, then rush toward the smallest grouping of vampires.

The four of them look smug and overly confident. I don't know if I can take them all at once, but I'll fight them to the death before I tap out. Maybe it's me being prideful or stubborn, but I'm not about to let Mateo use his soldiers to take me out. If he wants to teach me a lesson, he should fight me himself.

Two attack with lightning fast movements. I duck under a punch and roll under a kick, snapping my foot into the back of a vampire's leg and making them collapse. I don't hesitate to snap his neck.

I'm not killing them for good, but I need to at least take them all down if I want any chance of walking out of here with my dignity intact. The next three are easy prey and obviously weren't expecting me to be so efficient.
