The shower turns off. I peek down the hall, seeing the door to the bathroom is slightly open.
"You aren't bonded to her yet."
I grimace at his slap in the face. He's been insufferable since he completed the third exchange. Colt is one behind him. I'm firmly in last place, but I'm not going to rush her into another blood bond. She'll be bound to us all soon enough.
"It's not a race, Mateo." I head back to the chaise.
Demi goes into her bedroom. She's probably heard the entire conversation with her enhanced hearing.
"Bring her back in one piece and then we can talk."
I scoff. There will be no discussion about this. It will happen. There's no negotiation.
"Goodbye, Mateo." I lay my head back and close my eyes, shutting him and that annoying white noise of the speaker out.
Mateo can get fucked.

Demi
Pretending like I didn't hear their entire conversation is difficult, because I wanted to scream at both of them for being idiots. Then Mateo had to throw the blood bond in Grayson's face.
They’re being ridiculous.
After dressing in jeans, a casual, emerald V-neck shirt, and quick blow dry, I'm ready for whatever surprise Grayson has for me. He sits up from his reclined position when I walk through the living room and go to the kitchen. I grab some water for the road and toss it into the air.
"Ready?" I ask and catch the bottle before it can fall to the floor.
"Food first?"
"Do you even have to ask?"
He shakes his head. "You're right. Stupid question. Come on."
I let out an annoyed breath when he flashes from the apartment.
Seriously, what's with all the running? Just because we can go fast doesn't mean we have to go fast. I lock my door and take my sweet time getting into the elevator. I know where he went and I'm not going to run to the parking garage, chasing after him like a damn lovesick fool.
He can wait.

My straw makesan obnoxious sucking noise when I reach the bottom of my milkshake. Grayson stopped at Burger Shack for me—one of my favorite fast-food burger joints.
"So where are we going?" I set my empty cup in the holder in the center console.
Grayson's blue eyes spark with mischief. "You'll see."
"This is a good surprise, right?" I pick up his phone and look through the music app, searching for my favorite Odesza station.
"I think so. You don't need to be nervous."
"As long as you're not trying to kill me," I mutter at the phone.
Grayson pokes my arm.
I glance up.
