Was that supposed to help me?
“Elliot says I’m being a downer. You just need to talk to her more—be open. Share your life stories and whatnot.”
“Thanks,” I said, ready for the damn therapy session to end.
“Also, you guys should come to dinner tonight. It’s too quiet without you there.”
I snorted. “Because I’m so loud.”
She laughed. “Your presence is.” There was a beat of silence. “Alright, go talk to Char. Thanks for calling—and stop stalking her online profile in an attempt to come up with date ideas. Me and Sab can send you some; I won’t tell her why we’re doing it, so she won’t know about your stalking. You’re going to have to tell Char about it, though.”
I grunted in response. “Bye, Lizzy.”
She laughed, but got the message and hung up the phone.
My phone started blowing up with texts from her and Sab less than two minutes later, and I had to put the damn thing on silent just so the constant dinging wouldn’t drive both me and the beast within me to further insanity.
Not like we were all that sane as it was.
I closed her computer and put it back on the nightstand, straightening the blankets I’d moved a bit, and then went back to cleaning.
SIXTEEN
RYDER
After the spareroom and bathroom were clean, I heard a car outside.
My wolf nearly shoved his way out in his excitement to see our girl, and I had to jog across the house to calm him enough to stay in my skin.
A tug of the door later, I was out on the porch, my eyes colliding with…
“Lisa?” Surprise prevented me from growling or snarling at her, like I probably should’ve.
“Hey, Handsome.” She gave me one of her practiced smiles, stepping up and putting her hand on my chest.
I pushed her away with a grip on her wrist even before my wolf could snarl through me.
“Can I come in?” She peered around me, trying to see into Char’s place.
Ourplace.
“No.” My voice was flat, and I didn’t try to hide my anger. “What the fuck do you want?”
“Is that any way to treat the mate you turned into a monster?” She put a hand on her hip, and I scoffed.
“I might have turned you, but we’re not mates. Go home.” I stepped back, striding back toward the door.
Before I made it inside, she’d slid between me and the inside of Char’s place. And before I could push her away again, her arms were around me and her lips were smushed against mine.
I was already shoving her damned arms and face away from me when I heard another set of tires on the road outside.
Fuck.
Let it not be—
“What the hell?” Char nearly screamed the words before her door slammed shut behind her.
Shit.
