Evie takes my hand and attempts to tug me away from her brother, but my feet remain grounded. Max's eyes watch me carefully, ignoring the irritated look I'm sure Evie is shooting him.
"He can sit in for Julian."
"No, we're leaving."
"Why don't you ask him, Evie. Maybe he wants to play."
Play? No, thanks. Whatever he's referring to sounds less and less fun with each passing second.
"Listen, Max." Evie releases my hand and flies past me, stepping in Max's face. "You can stop with your games. Leo and I have a few things we need to discuss. We. Are. Leaving."
"No games, little sis. Just wanted to invite him to hang out with the guys." Max raises his hands in surrender and takes a step back. "You two go talk."
Talk.
He said it like a warning. What I heard was "all you better do is talk" instead of the single word.
Will I always hear Max in my ear? Threatening me. Warning me away from Evie.
I sure as hell hope not.
Max leaves us alone once again, and before I can say a word, Evie is dragging me out the opposite door. I let her take the lead, leaving my car parked in the Kappa driveway and walking back to campus with her. She doesn't say a word or slow down until we're in her room with the door locked behind us.
Then she says the one word I never expect her to say.
"Tandy."
