“No, no. I insist you let Justine and I do the breakfast, a small token for our dearest friends. Never did I think I’d see the day that you would actually marry—and to Georgie.”

“Not more surprised than I.”

“Let me assure you, my friend, there is something to be said for a surprise marriage,” said Brandon. “I wasn’t even aware I was married when I came back to Wolfsgate after the shipwreck, thanks to my uncle and William’s machinations. But like me and Justine, you and Georgina have known each other and been friends for years. That, Charles, is something to build on. And yes, there were difficulties and mistakes, but we achieved much together, and we are very, very happy.”

“You certainly are. Ah, Brandon, I want Georgina to be happy. I don’t want to disappoint her. For the first time in a very long time, I feel …” He let out a groan. “I don’t know…”

“Go on, say it.”

“I feel helpless. Incapable.”

“That is good.”

“How is that good?”

“You have a conscience. You feel the weight of your many responsibilities. Perhaps it’s something new for you, Ryvves. And your estate now lays on your shoulders alone. You will be deciding everything. But you’re experienced. I really did not have much of that experience before it landed in my lap, and Wolfsgate was in an awful mess. Your estate is in good health, is it not?”

“It is. Luckily, my brother didn’t get a chance to enjoy himself as Earl for more than two months, and so it remained under my guidance and intact.”

They reached Brandon’s horse. “Leave the dead behind you, Charles, and live your new life. Enjoy it. Embrace it. And know, I am here for you.”

“I thank you, my friend.”

Brandon mounted his horse. “We shall bring the bride on time. See that you are there waiting.”

“Oh, I shall be.”

ChapterTwenty-Six

Georgina

“You’re sure you like it?”

“It’s gorgeous. Absolutely perfect.” Georgina’s fingers delicately fluffed at the cream silk dress detailed with gold that she wore. “Mademoiselle Therese is one of the finest dressmakers in all of London. To wear such a gown for my wedding…”

“I’m thrilled to have you wear it. I never got the chance as I grew quickly when I was with child. To have you wear it for your wedding makes me so very happy. Are you sure you’re not disappointed that you won’t be wearing a new frock you’ve chosen on your own?”

“Everything about this wedding is unordinary. Wearing this dress will make it truly special to me.” She hugged her friend. “I’m most pleased. Indeed, I feel blessed.”

“I never had a proper wedding, never mind a pretty dress, so I am very gratified that in this small way I am able to help you with yours.”

Arm in arm, they both turned and faced the looking glass. “You know that your and Brandon’s marriage has always been an inspiration to me. Perhaps by wearing this dress, a little of that good fortune shall rub off on me.”

The village dressmakerarrived and made a few small adjustments to the fit of the dress. Georgina also ordered an entire new wardrobe befitting the Countess of Ryvves. They did not, however, tell Mrs. Thompson that Georgina and the Earl of Ryvves were to marry. Otherwise, it would spread like wildfire across the village in an hour’s time.

Mrs. Thompson took quick notes in her small notebook. “Underthings, chemises, night dress, dressing gown, muslins for day, and elegant dinner dresses.”

“And, Mrs. Thompson, do not send the bill to Fairthorn.” Georgina kept her voice light. “I shall come by your shop and make arrangements myself.”

“Of course, Miss. As you wish.”

After Mrs. Thompson departed, the two friends enjoyed their tea on the wide stone terrace in the shade.

“Now you will be the lady of a grand estate,” said Justine. “I have not been to Charles’s home for quite some time. With his father having been ill for so long, they, of course, did not entertain. Now, you who have such exquisite taste will remake that house however you like. You will let me help you, won’t you?”

“I shall take great pleasure in having you assist.” Her smile faded as she sipped at her tea. “Although, perhaps Charles will not want any changes made.”
