I imagined what might’ve happened if she hadn’t put a stop to things in that hot tub. I envisioned lifting her out of it and peeling off those sexy bikini bottoms. I’d have used my hands, my mouth, and my words to push her all the way to the edge, but then I would’ve stopped and carried her to bed.
It would only have been there, where we could’ve fallen asleep together after, that I would have let her come. My own orgasm raced through me then, making me moan her name as I fucked my fist with that wild abandon that only she seemed to elicit from me.
My body shook as I finished, and I gulped in a few breaths of air as I relaxed and stepped back under the spray. Once I could move properly again, I washed off my sweat and come, wondering what she would think if she found out what I’d just done to thoughts of her. I had a feeling she’d like it, though, which didn’t make my situation any easier.
I got out of the shower just as my phone started to ring. Knotting the towel around my waist, I jogged into my bedroom and grinned when I saw it was her calling. Picking up immediately, I dropped onto my bed and lay back on the mattress as I greeted her. “This is a surprise. I wasn’t expecting to hear from you today. Have you changed your mind about going skydiving this weekend?”
“No,” she said quickly. “I haven’t changed my mind, but do you have a minute to talk? If I’m interrupting something, you can just tell me and I’ll call you back later. It doesn’t have to be right now. I mean, it’s not urgent, so you can call me back, too. Anytime you can, but it needs to be today.”
My eyes narrowed. “You seem odd. Nervous almost. What’s up? I can talk. You caught me at a perfect time, actually. I’m done with my meetings for the day, I’ve been to the gym, and I just got out of the shower, so the only thing left on my agenda is practicing.”
“Practicing?” she asked.
“Yeah. Practicing. After we talked the other day, I decided to participate in the tournament coming up in a couple months, after all. I hadn’t withdrawn yet, so I just need to get back into the swing of things and I should be golden. Anyway, what’s going on with you?”
“That’s great,” she gushed, but then abruptly stopped talking and exhaled deeply. “Really, I’m so happy for you. If you need to say no so you can practice, that’s fine. I understand. Totally.”
“Serenity?” I frowned. “You’re starting to worry me. I can’t say no if you won’t tell me what I can say no to if I want, which I won’t, by the way. I won’t want to say no, but you need to tell me what’s happening first anyway.”
“Okay, well, uh, do you think I can pick you up early tomorrow morning?”
“We’re going skydiving on Saturday,” I said. “It’s only Thursday today, unless I’ve missed something.”
“No, no this isn’t about that. It’s something else, but it’s a surprise, so I can’t tell you what we’re doing or where we’re going.”
Curiosity bloomed inside me. “Sure. I’ll be there. Just text me a time and I’ll make sure I’m ready to go then.”
“Thanks,” she said, sounding more relieved than seemed reasonable. “I’ll see you tomorrow morning, then. Have a good practice.”
“Happy songwriting,” I replied, frowning when I realized she’d already hung up the phone. What on earth is she up to?
I didn’t really care. As long as it meant getting to see her again, I was all in. She could be taking me down to the docks to cut off my toes and I’d probably be salivating just because she was touching me to keep me still.
Barking out a laugh in the silence of the room, I sat up and got off the bed. I sure as fuck didn’t mind taking a few hours off practice to spend them with her instead, but I was also serious about this tournament. Serenity’s dogged pursuit of her dream had inspired me, and I wasn’t just going to sit back and expect to win without putting in the work.
It would be a late night for me if I crammed in all of tomorrow’s hours tonight, but getting to wake up to see her would make it worth it. Slowly but surely, I seemed to be putting my life back together, and so far, it was starting to feel like it was going to be a surprisingly good one—as long as she stayed in it.
CHAPTER22
SERENITY
I’m a nervous wreck, I thought as I pulled up outside Bart’s apartment building. I hadn’t been to his place yet, but he’d texted me his address and his building wasnice. Very nice. So nice that it made me wonder if the simple day out I had planned would go over very well after all.
I knew he’d moved in here before he’d sold his company, which meant he’d been doing better than I’d realized for a long time now. He’d probably gotten used to a certain lifestyle, which was worrying, but then I remembered how much he’d enjoyed feeding the ducks at the pond, and I relaxed.
Just because he had more money than I could ever dream of didn’t mean he only knew how to have fun or appreciate things that cost a lot. I was still sitting there trying to convince myself that this wouldn’t be a total flop when the passenger door suddenly opened and Bart ducked his grinning face into my beat-up old car.
“Hey,” he said happily, dropping into the seat. “Do I get to know what we’re doing yet? I’ve been trying to figure it out, but I’ve got absolutely no viable ideas.”
As they always seemed to around him, my nerves vanished as soon as he started talking and I laughed. Reaching over, I smacked the glove compartment so it would open—the latch had been broken for years—and I handed him one of the ballcaps I’d stashed in there.
“That’s all you get for now,” I said, closing the compartment again before buckling up my seatbelt and checking the traffic. “You won’t have to wait long, though. I promise we’re not taking a trip out of the city.”
“Okay,” he said, turning the cap over in his hands and studying it like it held all the answers. “Are we going fishing? Tanner’s always got a bunch of these lying around in his car from all his fishing trips.”
“We’re not going fishing,” I said. “I’m not explaining anything else until we get there, though. How was practice? Are you getting back into the swing of things?”
He pouted but then settled back in his seat and told me more about the upcoming tournament. When he was done, he turned to me. “How are our chart-toppers coming along? Written any more of them recently?”
