“Yes, but—”

“No but.” I shook my head and moved forward when I saw him.

Rob sat in handcuffs in the corner of the family room.

Myfamily room.

His head had a laceration and swelling.

“What the hell is he doing here?” My pulse didn’t soar. It attacked my body—hearing loss, dizziness, crazed.

I shot toward Rob as Nate lunged for me.

“What did you do to her?” I yelled, swinging at him.

Rob sat smugly with raging eyes.

Dark pupils in the center with even darker rings.

He licked his lips. “She tastes just as sweet as I remember.”

Blind fury shot through me as Nate tackled me.

“Don’t do this, Cash. He’s not worth it. He’s already going away,” he whispered.

Nate grabbed my arms and helped me up.

Rob flicked his chin at me with a smirk, and I swore to God that my fists tingled.

This wasn’t the sign I was looking for, but it would feel so good to make things right like this.

“Don’t do it,” Nate snapped under his breath. “Go outside to Maya.”

I turned slowly and nodded.

Nate leaned into me. “And since when don’t you answer your Goddamn phone?”

I closed my eyes and shook my head. “Shit. I’m sorry. I just... I was at Freya’s. It was our anniversary.”

“And the plot thickens,” Rob said, overhearing.

My fists clenched as Nate pushed me toward the doors leading to Maya.

“I’m so sorry,” he said softly. “I should have remembered. I was a damn groomsman, for Christ’s sake.”

I shook my head and looked straight ahead of me as I got to the door.

Maya had a blanket draped over her shoulders, but she was facing the lake. A female officer was kneeling in front of her, speaking quietly.

“I called for county backup. This property is right on the edge, and they have more resources.”

“Resources?” My voice cracked.

Maya turned around slowly to see me, and my world spun out of control.
