The lead alternated until the final whistle.

“A draw is a good result. Hell of a game,” Luna said after they’d shaken hands and moved away from the girls. Only then did they all brace their hands on thighs and suck in deep breaths.

“You okay, Quinn?”

She straightened and found Nixon behind her.

“Sure, I’m good.”

“Your eyes are going black.”

“Really?”

“You okay?” Luke arrived with Benji in his arms.

She’d noticed that about him; he always had a niece or nephew hanging off him.

“Yeah. It was fun.”

“You may want to get some ice for that.” He pointed to her nose and then walked away. Angry again, she thought, looking at Nixon who was watching him.

“What’s his problem?”

“He’s worried about you.”

“It’s my nose, and it will heal.”

Nixon shrugged.

Quinn’s cell phone was buzzing when she picked up her bag. Digging it out, she answered.

“Quinn. You need to get home.”

“What’s going on, Mom?” She started moving toward the exit, hearing the quiver in her mother’s voice. The woman was tougher than any she knew. If she was upset, things were bad.

“It’s the berries, Quinn. They’re destroyed.”

“What? How?”

“The goats got into the houses. It’s all ruined! Someone left the gate open.”

“I’ll be there soon, Mom. Try and stay calm.” She dropped the phone in her bag and started running.

“Problem?” Luke stepped in front of her.

“I have to get home.”

“What’s going on?”

“I don’t know. Mom just called upset. Crap.” Quinn looked for Piper.

“Crap, what?”

“I don’t have my car.”

“I have mine. Let’s go.”
