I must have gotten comfortable enough to have fallen asleep because he wakes me when we get to Bedford so that I can use the restroom at a small gas station while he fills up the tank.

When I come out, he’s inside the store paying for the gas so I get back in the car before anyone can see me as I am. I got a really good look at myself in the bathroom mirror. I look like absolute hell.

“Got us a few snacks to hold us over until the next stop.” He hands me a bag, climbing into the driver seat.

“Where are we going anyway? I guess that’s something I should have already asked.” I glance his way as I pull a drink and some chips from the bag he handed me.

“Montana.” He states but gives no other information.

“Is there a reason for Montana specifically?” I ask between chips.

“I have a friend that has a place where we can stay. At least until we can figure out what to do about... everything.” His eyes look my way before turning back to the road.

“Can I ask you a question?” I ask. He finally nods in answer. “Why are you helping me? We don’t even know each other.”

He seems to think on it until I’m convinced he’s not going to answer.

“I don’t know.” He answers and I turn back to my chips.

Several minutes later, he speaks again. “I want us to know each other though. If that’s okay?” He never glances my way as if he’s afraid of what I’ll say. But that would be ridiculous right? This handsome as sin man afraid of what I might think.

Reaching over with my left hand, I place it on top of his. “I think I would like that.” I whisper, squeezing his fingers under mine.

He seems to stiffen at first before his hand relaxes and he moves his fingers to tangle with my own. For some reason it feels way more intimate than if we were naked together.

Neither of us let go as we continue down the road in silence and I finish off my chips with only one hand.

Raven sleeps off and on as I continue our journey across several states. If I were by myself I would most likely drive straight through and sleep once I get there.

Finding the next rest stop along I-94, I pull in, parking in the middle of several RV’s and big trucks.

“We’re stopping?” She asks sleepily from the passenger seat.

“Yeah, I need to get a few hours of sleep, then we’ll continue on our way.” I rub my tired eyes as I lay my seat further back.
