Chapter 4

Giovanni

It’s late when we finally make it to the cabin. My brother told me he would make sure it was stocked with some supplies to get us through for a few days.

Reaching over, I nudge her arm until her eyes open, looking at me questioningly.

“We’re here.” I nod towards the cabin.

There’s a light on so I know my brother has already started the generator ahead of us getting here. He and his wife had it wired about a year ago and mostly use it as a little get away when they can manage a weekend alone.

“You can go on inside. I’ll grab everything from the car.” I say, pointing her towards the door.

I watch to be sure she gets up the stairs without a problem. She’s still limping a good bit but seems to be getting stronger as the days pass. The bruises may take a bit longer though.

Grabbing our bags, I follow her into the cabin. I’ve never been here before myself but I know that it only has one bedroom that my sister in law had added to it a year ago. The living room and kitchen are all in one room.

“I’ll put your stuff in the bedroom and I’ll take the couch.” I say when I realize that she’s noticed there’s only one bed.

She smiles but doesn’t comment.

“This is your brother’s place?” She asks when I walk back into the room.

“It’s actually my sister in laws. She had the bedroom added to it about a year ago. Said she was tired of trying to fit two people on a twin bed in a one room cabin.” I answer, heading to the small fridge.

Opening it I’m thankful that my brother had it stocked before our arrival.

“Want a bottle of water? There’s also some coke.” I ask, turning in her direction.

“Water would be good.” She answers.

Handing her a bottle, I open my own and take a drink before setting it down on the table.

“You look tired.” She murmurs softly, looking right at me.

I just shake my head because I am tired. Pretty much driving straight across the country will do that to anyone. Even someone in my line of work.

“I’ll go to bed too. I’m not really sleepy but I am tired. If that makes any sense.” She says.
