The last thing she wanted was for Ramsay to resent her.
Chapter 27
Mental Torture
Somethingwaswrong.
Ramsay sensed the tension in Gabrielle. She’d grown pale and looked as if she might barf when they entered Gavin’s surgery, which was in the house where he’d lived before he mated with Leticia and Charlie, one of Middlemarch’s cops.
“Take a seat,” Ramsay said because she wavered on her feet as if her knees might buckle.
Gavin entered what used to be the lounge. He was tall—over six feet with straight black hair in need of a cut and green eyes. The second his gaze landed on Gabrielle, he hurried over to her, his concern evident.
Gavin squatted in front of her.“Hello, you must be Gabrielle.I’m Gavin, the local doctor. Why don’t you come to my surgery, and we’ll give you a checkup? Can you stand on your own?”
In reply, she stood, but she wobbled as if she might fall.
Gavin slipped an arm around her waist.“Let me help you.”
Ramsay hung back, watching the pair disappear into Gavin’s surgery.
“I want Ramsay,” Gabrielle said, an edge of panic to her tone.
Relief fluttered through Ramsay, and ground-eating steps took him to the surgery. He grasped Gabrielle’s hand, concern filling him. She’d been fine until it came time for this appointment.
Gavin took the lead, and Ramsay was glad he’d briefed their doctor. The knotting phenomenon had intrigued Gavin, and he intended to research this since, as far as he knew, this hadn’t happened to others apart from Rory and Anita.“Gabrielle, let’s do a full physical.First, I’ll listen to your heart, take your blood pressure.”
“Can you check to see if I’m pregnant?”Gabrielle asked, the words exploding from her.
“We’ll do a urine test,” Gavin said.
Gavin’s calm manner seemed to soothe Gabrielle, and when they left an hour later, she was noticeably stronger.
“Ramsay, what if I am pregnant?Having his child would be torture.”
Ramsay ached for her, her distress, which continued even though he’d tried to reassure her.“He went through a lot of wives. The odds are high Adrik was the problem, not his wives.Gavin told us he could do most of the tests, and we’ll get the results tomorrow. If you’re pregnant, we’ll deal with it.Gavin will give us the options, and we’ll choose the best for you.”
“I don’t want reminders of him!”
“Kitten, no one here—not one of our friends—will think less of you if you have a baby. There are other alternatives, but let’s not worry until we hear the test results.I thought I might take you to visit London. You remember Gerard and Henry?London is Gerard’s mate, and Emily told me she needs an assistant. You could be that person.”
Gabrielle scowled.“I don’t think—”
“Henry breeds puppies.I’ve been thinking about getting one.”He hadn’t, but Gabrielle might enjoy having a pet.At the least, it would claim her attention and perhaps divert her a little.
As he’d hoped, London and Gabrielle got on well, and London offered her the position. They ended up staying for dinner, and Gabrielle was wilting by the time they arrived home.
“I don’t know why I’m so tired,” Gabrielle said.“It’s not even eight o’clock.”
“It doesn’t matter.Go to bed.I’ll be there shortly and expecting a cuddle,” he added.
His phone rang, and Gabrielle went statue-still, barely breathing. Her eyes held terror.
“It’s okay,” he whispered, although his gut bucked with alarm on seeing Gavin was the caller.“Hi, Gavin.Yeah, okay.Just let me put the phone on speaker for Gabrielle.”
“Am I pregnant?”Gabrielle asked, her cheeks pale again.
Gavin hesitated, the silence telling.“Yes.”
