They hurried to his room. Minutes later, Grimm had his gun strapped on beneath his jacket, and Dezi had the knife he’d given her in her pocket.

“We’d better hurry. I don’t want to keep Chad waiting. I don’t want him to get there before us in case the competition figures out where we’re headed. It puts Chad at risk.”

“Maybe we shouldn’t take Chad with us,” Dezi said as she left the room with Grimm.

“I bet if we asked him, he’d say he’d take the risk.”

Dezi frowned. “I don’t like the idea of Chad becoming collateral damage.”

“Hopefully, that won’t happen.”

As they stepped into the lobby, Grimm stopped and pulled out his cell phone. “Before we get out of cell phone range, I want to let Hank know where we’re headed.” He placed the call and put it on speaker.

“Sorry we didn’t call last night,” Grimm said.

“No worries. We were able to track you back to the lodge. If you hadn’t gotten back, we would’ve worried.”

Grimm let Hank know that Murdock would be following them as soon as Angus McKinnon brought ATVs to the drop location.

“Good. Glad to hear you’re taking backup. You might already know Angus. He’s prior Army Delta Force, like you.”

“I’d heard of him but didn’t meet him until I came to work for Molly and Parker,” Grimm said.

“I sent Bear to Bozeman to look into the fourth poker player. His name is Terrence Gifford. Bear wasn’t able to meet with him.”

“Is he related to Eugene?” Dezi asked.

“Yes,” Hank said. “They’re brothers.”

Dezi shook her head. “Does that shoot our theory about the fourth poker player being the killer?”

“Why would it blow our theory?” Grimm asked.

“Eugene was attacked,” Dezi’s brow knitted. "I wouldn’t think his brother would have done that.”

“What if Eugene and his brother didn’t get along?” Hank said.

Dezi sighed. “Good point. We’ll be on the looked out for Terrence Gifford.”

“Hank, we’re leaving now to meet our guide,” Grimm said.

“Swedeand I will track you. Call on the satellite phone if you need more backup.”

“Will do.” Grimm ended the call.

They emerged from the lodge and climbed into the truck. Moments later, they were on their way to solve the next clues from her uncle’s letter.

Dezi prayed that where they were going wouldn’t lead to another location and yet another. She had a gut feeling that time was running out. If they didn’t find what her uncle was leading her to, someone else would get there first.

After all they’d gone through, Dezi would be damned if she’d let that happen.

She sat forward in the truck, looking for anything out of the ordinary in front and behind them, getting more anxious the closer they got to their rendezvous location.

They arrived before Chad. Not long after Grimm parked, Chad pulled up with the trailer and ATVs.

Grimm and Dezi helped him unload the four-wheelers.

“I brought flashlights and headlamps,” Chad said. “The ghost town is built over an abandoned mine. The entrances are supposedly sealed, but you never know what you’ll find.”
