The detective just got lucky.

Chapter34

Avalon

The squeakingof his chair turns into a screech when he moves. “What?”

“I think he’s dumping another body.” I squeeze my eyes shut and wait for his response. What will it be this time? Anger or doubt again? Or is he finally in all the way?

“Jesus. Who?”

Acceptance then. I look at Jake again. “I don’t know yet. And I don’t know if it’s already happened or if he’s planning on doing it soon. All I know is there will be another body for us to find—and soon.”

“Did you have another vision?”

“No. It was a voice.”

“A voice? Is that . . . normal?”

I laugh. The sound is unintentional and broken. Normal? “I don’t know what’s normal anymore. Unusual for me, yes. But not something that hasn’t happened before.”

“Okay . . .” The word is dragged out, slow and careful.

He’s silent.

I wipe an errant tear. “What’s next?”

He sighs. “Notify her family. Wait for autopsy reports.”

“It will get the press into a frenzy again.”

“Yes, but it will go away like every other horrible event. Other things will hit the newsand people will forget.”

I search his face, looking for answers to questions I haven’t asked. “Not everyone. Victoria’s family won’t ever forget it.”

“No. They’ll have to learn to live without her.”

Like he learned to live without his sister. He doesn’t say it. He doesn’t know that I know. But I hear it in his voice anyway. “The press won’t go away. There will be the next body. The question is, why now? Why is he dumping bodies now? And why did he keep them this long?”

He rubs his face. “We’ll have more information once they release the autopsy results. Maybe something in them will give us an answer.”
