I smile. “Are you going to take his yoga class?”

“Girl, I’m going to take everything he has to offer. You remember those abs, don’t you?”

“How could I forget? You have shown me that picture at least a dozen times.”

“You exaggerate.”

“I woke up yesterday with you holding your phone and that picture on my face!”

“Sharing is caring.”

Thank heavens for Lynn. I’m laughing so hard that there are tears in the corners of my eyes. “Oh, Lynn, what would I do without you?”

“Be bored and turn into a recluse.”

“Probably.” The laugh dies away, and silence fills the car. I take a deep breath. “Jake’s boss caught us—”

“Having sex in his office!”

“No! Oh my God, Lynn, no. Although that might have been better.”

“What do you mean?”

“He caught me reading some evidence.”

“Oh shit. How bad is it?”

“Not as bad as I thought it would be. He believed me. Or at least I think he did. Maybe he’s just testing me. He looks like the kind to give you enough rope so you can hang yourself.”

“Why do you say that?”

“I know where Alice’s body is, and the three of us are driving there now.”

“Wait, are they all listening to me right now?”

“No, silly. I would never do that. I’m driving alone. Following Jake with Chief Malone following me.”

“Why are you all driving separate cars?”

“Chief’s idea. I’ll find the body and get out of there before they call dispatch, like last time.”

“Not like last time. I won’t be there to get you. I don’t have a car.”

“It’s fine. I can do it.”

“I don’t like this one bit. You shouldn’t be alone.”

“It will be okay, trust me. I can feel it and it won’t be as bad as Victoria.”

“You always say that, but you pay for it later.”

She’s not wrong. “I’m getting better at it. And I think I’ve turned a corner with Jake.”

“About time! I don’t know how much more proof he needs.”

Ahead of me, Jake slows down and turns off the highway. I glance in the rearview mirror. The chief is still behind me. Up ahead, signs to the park tell me we’re close. “I have to go. We’re almost at the place.”

“Okay, make sure to call me when you leave there.”
