I walk towards her.

“I panicked.”

The front door slams and I stop in my tracks, glancing behind my back to check that the door is closed behind us. I don’t even know if the one in my room is still open…

“Yeah, I see,” Scarlett sighs when she sees my backward movement. “Don’t bother with that, Nolan, I get the picture. You and me, it’s not possible.”

I bite my cheek.

“You don’t get it, no.”

She raises a questioning eyebrow and I walk around the bed to join her. I place a hand on the back of her neck, forcing her tokeep her eyes on mine.

“I like you, Scarlett. I screwed up more than once with you and I just want you to know that if I push you away,it’sbecause it’s not possible. Not because I don’t care or regret or am not interested in you.”

I hear her swallow, see her stare at my lips for a moment before returning her attention to my eyes.

“Believe me, if it wasn’t for your brother, if it wasn’t for this living situation and you were justagirl and I wasaguy, you’d be mine.”

Her head slides to the side, landing on the hand I placed on her cheek. She closes her eyes, sighing on my skin.

“You’re not making it easy,” she says. “Saying things like that to me, while you keep me away.”

I grab her chin with my fingertips to force her to look at me.

“It’s not you I’m keeping away. It’s me. Because I know that if I continue to let my desires do the talking, I’ll go crazy.”

“I don’t understand what’s stopping you. My brother? He’ll never know. Leo? He doesn’t care.”

I pull back, and look at her sideway, confused.

“Your brother is my best friend. I can’t lie to him forever. If he finds out, I’m a dead man! You’re forgetting his fucking rules!”

“And who’s going to tell him? You? Me?”

“Stopthis, Scar.”

She grabs my T-shirt to force me to stay close to her. I shake my head, momentarily forgetting why I’m noton topof her right now. I’m dying to make love to her, and when she slides a hand over my bare belly, I shiver.

“We can’t do this anymore,” I sigh, my voice hoarse. “We can’t.”

My body is screaming at me the opposite. She presses her breasts on my chest and her pelvis hits against my erection. A gleam of desire illuminates her irises and I swallow withdifficulty the saliva that accumulates in my mouth.

“You’re dying to.”

I bite my lower lip. She sighs as she stands on her tiptoes.

“You came to my room to tell me what? That you like me, but we can’t?”

I nod my head, no longer sure that this is exactly what I want right now.

“I propose something to you,” she says a few inches from my lips. “Stay. Just tonight, and if tomorrow morning you decide thatthishas gone on long enough, then I promise youitwill have never existed.”

But it did exist.

My mouth crashes against hers without restraint, because the distance between her and me has strained my nerves. The memories her warmth brings back are too powerful and the desire that explodes in my veins when our bodies collide makes me forget all my doubts.
