Sure, I could open the door for him, and we could pick up where we left off, but I couldn’t get Charlotte out of my head. I couldn’t even get an uber on my own tonight and she could pop up wherever, whenever. I felt so helpless, Irish thought he had to guard my door because my brother was gone. It didn’t help that I heard him and his ex yell at each other like two people in love. Just like Jass and Pagan.
“Goodnight, Irish. Thanks for staying,” I said before popping in my air pods. At least with him outside, I could let my guard down. I listened to rain sounds until I fell asleep.
Chapter 12
Irish
Tossing and turning on Cece’s couch, it was ages ‘till I fell asleep. I couldn’t leave her. I didn’t want to. But on the other hand, her brother could catch me sleeping here, and I’d never wake up again.
How did I get so unlucky as to have Charlotte ruin my chances with Cece? Who was she to be playing a vixen in my bed? She wouldn’t have me five years ago. I’d been a fool pining over her all these years. It was my fault for wishing for her for so long.
Back at my apartment, I’d told Charlotte I never wanted to see her again. I could scarcely believe, I meant it. But I did. I would’ve said more, but I noticed Cece had left. I had to go after her. Finding her in danger enraged me. Maybe I was too harsh when I yelled at her.
Now I only wanted Cece. Sadly, the girl wanted nothing to do with me after we found my ex in my bed. To think, I could be in bed with Cece having the ride of my life. Probably for the best. My luck, her brother would burst in and shoot me. As it was, I was on her couch perplexed.
What did I do wrong? Maybe I shouldn’t have told her the provocative pose Charlotte was in. But she’d just asked me to be more helpful. Women, I never understood them.
On top of my longing for Cece, my fight was in three days. I wasn’t ready for the likes of Pagan. Way out of my weight class he could wipe the floor with me if I wasn’t on top of my game. Fuck. I needed a beer or some whiskey, but I didn’t dare leave Cece alone. The girl wrecked my head.
Cece woke me the next day. The light haloed around her. She was pure angelic. “Get up. It’s time to get to work.”
“Good morning, beautiful.”
She smiled and my heart melted at the sight of it. “You’re supposed to be filling in for me, remember? I’m serious. Can you please get out of here before my brother gets back?”
The sun shined through the windows, so I figured it was okay to leave her. “Meet me in the kitchen? You need to show me where to find all the laundry. Remember?”
“I’ll be over in an hour. I have to get ready.”
As I left, I heard her hollering for Waldo.
I went to Cousin’s place to freshen up. Inside Payday laid naked on the couch with a naked Paisley cradled into him. Seemed she’d moved on quick. Him too. Tiptoeing out of there, a weight lifted. No more Charlotte and no more Paisley. Only Cece.
Sweet Tea raged when I showed up at ten a.m. “Where’ve you been? It’s damn near lunchtime now. When’s Cece going to be back?”
Cece showed up in the next hour, right after I finished the floors.
“Waldo’s still not back. Neither is Pagan or Jass.”
“Maybe they have the dog with them,” I said, trying to cheer her up as she wiped a tear away.
She had her cane and showed me her way around Royal Road to find all the towels. The club was eerily quiet this morning. I looked out the window to see that most of the motorcycles were gone.
“What have I missed?” I texted Cricket who I knew would be awake.
Following Cece, I carried an armful to the big washer in the locker room. While she showed me how to work it, I got a text back from Cricket.
“Skirmish over in Jackson. Most everyone left out early this morning to ambush the Gods.”
“Pagan?”
“Yeah, heard he’s probably there by now.”
“Kingpin?”
“He wouldn’t miss it.”
“Let me know if you hear when they’ll be back.”
