The fraught silence lingered between them even after they got into the condo. Without looking at him, Leanne hung up her coat and set her purse on the end table in the living room. Finally, she turned, and her face stopped him mid-stride.

“I don’t know what the hell is happening, but you’re scared to death,” he said softly.

Quietly, she nodded, twisting her fingers together until he stilled her with a touch. “And you honestly can’t explain?” he added.

Leanne let out a shaky breath. “Bad things will happen if I try.”

Whoa. What the hell.

“Are you in trouble, Butterfly?” The endearment slipped out, even under these circumstances. He couldn’t bring himself to picture a reality in which she would seriously do anything to hurt him. Leanne was an honest person, the first to believe in him in forever.

Her smoky eyes were so dark that they looked almost black, and she was pale beneath her tan, fingers anxiously fidgeting with the hem of her blazer once he let go of her. “I’mnot.”

But I will be if I pursue this.

That was the clear message he got from her body language, and then he knew. It didn’t matter. Whatever she was into, even if she belonged to some weird-ass secret society or believed she was a witch, it didn’t change anything. Not for him. If she needed help, he’d figure out a way to provide it. Earning money wasn’t his strong suit, but he’d attracted a few clients in the past few months, and he made more managing socials than he had mowing lawns.

Way less sweaty too. Maybe I can hire someone to look into Gladys quietly? See what Leanne’s gotten roped into. But she seems to think that would be dangerous…Maybe it would be safer to stick to learning web design. He was doing simple sites now, nothing too fancy, but he’d get better. “Then it’s just as well that I have no questions. I didn’t hear anything before I dropped the pizza plate. There was a lot of wind. I’m sure you just had a good gossip with Gladys, or maybe you managed to get her to share her secret streusel recipe? If so, I’m all ears. Even Titus would have a hard time making it so tasty.” He smiled then.

Her throat worked as she seemed to struggle to find words, and then she rushed him, slamming him into the wall with a driven kiss. Trev kissed her back desperately, feeling like he’d almost lost something precious even if he didn’t understand precisely why. He twined his hands in her hair and fell into the magic of her soft, warm body pressed against him. Her delicious mouth glided over his, and he tasted her again, again, loving the fact that he got to take her home at the end of a long night where everyone wanted a piece of her.

But she’s mine. No matter what, this woman chose me. I won’t let her down.

When the time comes, I’ll prove it, Butterfly.

Chapter 21

Leanne lost track of how they made it to the bedroom.

It was a storm of kissing and touching, then all their clothes hit the floor around the same time as her back hit the bed. Trev seemed to share her desperation, even if he didn’t understand how close she’d come to losing him tonight. She’d saved him from some awful council action by the skin of her teeth, and there were no assurances it wouldn’t happen again.

No, I refuse to imagine losing him.

She pushed the bad thoughts out of her brain and focused on the clean smell of his skin, the way he arched and moaned when she kissed a path down his bare chest, pausing on his hip to outline his pelvic bone with her tongue. He twisted and gasped as she teased him, clutching at the sheets with frantic hands.

I’ll protect you somehow. I will.

The lights were off, so she only caught a glimpse of his face, Trev biting down on his lower lip as she shifted and curled her fingers around his already-throbbing cock. His hips hitched as he silently pleaded for more with each movement. She stroked him and licked the crease high on his upper thigh. The hot sweep of her tongue drew a full groan, and he gave up on controlling himself.

“You’re sending me,” he whispered.

“That’s the point.”

“But I don’t want to go without you.”

For some reason, those quiet words hit hard, and she crawled back up his body as he rolled onto his side. Leanne slid a thigh across his hip and gloried in the feel of his hands roving down the smooth skin of her back. There was no calculation, just Trev taking a ridiculous amount of pleasure in touching her all over. He kissed her again like their endgame was making out, even as he slid his hard length against her slick pussy. But when she tried to get more friction, he put a steadying hand on her ass and offered the laziest, sexiest smile she’d ever seen. Then he kissed her nose.

“Don’t be in such a hurry, Butterfly. Let’s enjoy the ride.”

Leanne brushed her lips against his chin as longing swelled inside her, contained by sheer determination. “That’s what I’m trying to do. But it looks like you enjoy teasing me.”

“Seems I do. It’s wild how much I want you. Part of me just wants to have you, but I don’t want this to be over. I want to feel you and breathe you in, and…”

“What?” she asked.

“Worship you.”

From anyone else, a declaration like that might make her laugh and break the mood, but Trev had always treated her like a goddess, someone who would be forever precious, not a good time. And so, the words merged with her simmering desire, infusing it with an unfamiliar ache. There had been plenty of sex, but never quite like this. She wanted to crawl inside him and see if his heart could possibly be as warm as it seemed.
