I made a mental note to come back to that, because he’s rode my ass for the last few months and I think Widow has some things he may need to air out.
Maverick came around the corner just as I turned around.
“Forty fucking kilos.” He ran a hand through his hair. “He’s setting us up, and we got about twenty minutes to get this shit out of here.”
Fuck.
Chapter 28
Daniella
I fell back asleep for about an hour and a half, but I woke up in a cold sweat. I was hoping I could shove these feelings away, but it clearly is going to take some time to adjust. I turned on my lamp and noticed a piece of paper on the nightstand. It was a note.
Didn’t want to wake you. Travis had to take care of a few things he will be back in a little while. Don’t worry.
Dice.
Don’t worry. Right. I sighed. My phone got destroyed when they took us, so I guess a handwritten note might be my form of communication for the time being. I didn’t really want to be alone, so I got up and snuck to Tanner’s room. I figured if Travis was out, so was Mav. I gently knocked before cracking open the door.
“It’s me T,” I whispered.
“Come in, I’m awake,” she said from the bed.
The TV was on, but the volume was low and I could see the shadow of her messy bun on the wall as I tiptoed across the carpet.
“Mind if I join?” I asked.
She tossed back the cover next to her. “Climb on in.”
I slid under the fluffy comforter and rested my head back against the headboard.
“I’m ready to go back to normal,” I admitted.
Tanner let out a small laugh. “I don’t even know what normal is anymore since I met y’all.”
I snorted then nudged her. “It’s not for the faint of heart.”
She reached down to squeeze my hand. “There’s nowhere I’d rather be.”
“I hate to even say it, but I kind of miss working at Maxi’s.” I confessed with a twisted face.
Tanner laughed. “It wasn’t that bad.”
I turned my body to face her. “Not that bad? I had to refrain from decking at least two customers a day. I’m not sure I’m cut out to be in the public service line of work.”
Tanner cackled with her hand over her stomach.
“Seriously,” I said. “The menu clearly states ‘two sides with all entrées”. You know how many people, after they’ve been reading the menu for ten minutes, ask me, ‘how many sides come with that?’”
Tanner laughed even harder.
“I really want to say, ‘two sides bitch!’ I tossed my hands up dramatically.
Tanner fell over forward, still laughing as I joined in. It felt so good to laugh. I feel like I haven’t done it in years. Everything has been so tense, and serious, and scary. We caught our breath and settled back in position. With everything going on the last couple of days I have been vaguely aware of the slight nausea and sometimes a sharp pain in my stomach, but I just grouped it with the shit I went through at the trailer. I was hoping that would all pass by now, or even give me a little relief with the meds Doc prescribed, but I still can’t shake it.
Tanner and I both fell asleep, but it wasn’t long before I was jolted awake by a sharp pain. My body felt hot and I had a slight sheen of sweat on my skin. I slowly sat up and gathered the blankets to the side so I could sneak out of bed. Maybe a little cold water would make me feel better. When my feet hit the carpet, the room started to spin. I stumbled, but I caught myself on the nightstand, accidentally knocking off the alarm clock.
“Dani, you okay?” Tanner asked from behind me.
