Yeah, Finn, then who does? “Thanks.”
We got in a solid ride.Unfortunately, self-righteous me forgot to pack a snack bar in my backpack. When we stopped for a water break, my stomach growled.
Finn gave me the dimples. “I could eat too. I know a lunch spot in the next town, a couple of miles ahead. How about a sandwich?”
“Sounds great.” The relief was clear in my voice. “I was angry at someone this morning, and I forgot to bring a snack.”
His smile finally reached his eyes. “Then the least I can do is buy you lunch.”
The café was small, with a front counter and outdoor tables wobbling on the uneven brick sidewalk. “What do you like? I’ll grab the food if you stay with the bikes,” he said.
“Sure, thanks. Um … roast beef on rye with Swiss and provolone. Chips, too, please. I have my water. Maybe a cookie if they look good.”
“I thought you ate kale and beets and fish.”
“I do. I also eat roast beef on marble rye with Swiss and provolone and horseradish, if they have it.”
He walked off, shaking his head. I sat at a table and stretched the kinks out of my shoulders.
He returned with a couple of bags of chips and two colossal chocolate chip cookies. Half of that was going in my backpack for later. A sandwich was probably not the best midride snack, but if we rested for a while in the sunshine, I’d be ready again soon enough.
“What did you get, the veggie club perhaps?” I smirked at him.
“Nope, same thing you did.” He gazed down the street to the water’s edge, trying to keep his face blank, but I saw the teasing little smile on his sensual lips.
He didn’t want me, but facts were facts, and his lipsweresensual. I would have to get used to them if we were going to be friends. I couldn’t forever have heat pooling in my core as I imagined his mouth gliding over my body.
The food arrived, and we both dug in, savoring the first few bites. My stomach stopped trying to eat my liver, and I relaxed a little more. “Thanks for looking out for me.”
“No problem. You getting hit by a car does not help me in the race.”
“I meant about Evan.” I met his eyes.
He hunched over the table, coming closer. “I didn’t mean to overstep.”
“I know. I appreciate you trying to protect me. You were being a good friend.”
Something flashed behind his eyes as he lifted his sandwich for another bite. Disappointment?
The ride back to the farm was more leisure than training. We rode the winding multi-use path along the inland river before turning toward Perry Harbor. It was after lunch on a Monday. Naptime for little ones, and mercifully, there weren’t many mommy-stroller combos out. I breezed past them, keeping my attention on Finn’s rolling muscles and concentrating on my breathing.
The sky was a brilliant shade of deep blue with barely a cloud in sight. I loved this place. I was glad to be out in the beauty, even if it meant watching a sweating and panting sexy man I couldn’t have.
I wondered what kind of woman turned him on. Did he like control or giving it up? One thing I was certain about, he would be completely into sex. I don’t think Finn did anything halfway.
He wouldn’t imagine someone else, someone better. No, Finn would light candles, undress her slowly, and kiss her with heat. He’d make it good, no matter what. I wanted to be that woman, to tease him and hear him growl low and deep, knowing it was all for me. The perfect sex tutor. God, I wanted that.
I had to accept that he didn’t want me, that we were just biking friends. I’d go on dates and do my best not to compare them to Finn.

Emilyand I created a schedule for riding together twice a week. It wasn’t getting any easier to be near her without wanting to push her up against the closest surface and finally feel the press and gentle slide of her sweet lips. Her admission about a lack of experience set off a string of sexy dreams impacting my sleep and took morning wood to a painful level.
She texted yesterday saying something was wrong with her brakes and asked if I could take a look before work today since she was riding with Carrie and Angela later this week.
“Good morning. I brought you a breakfast sandwich and a smoothie, full of kale and beets.” Emily winked, handing me a bag and thermos. “I hear you take payment in the form of food.”
