“Yep.” Never say more than absolutely necessary when trying not to confess. I read that in a book once.

“Interesting. Well, you seem energetic today, so whatever he did, it must have been good.”

“Nothing happened,” I lied, and Carrie shot me a look. “Okay, something happened.” I glanced at Dan in the rearview mirror. He was stretched across the back seat like a man-spreading demonstration.

“Don’t worry about him. He’s tuned out so much girl talk by now, I don’t think he even realizes he’s doing it.” She grinned at me with a question in her eyes.

“He kissed me.”

“Uh-huh and?”

“And it was incredible.” My voice was low as I watched the road ahead.

Carrie kept looking at me.

“And I hope we do it again. Satisfied?”

“Close enough. I knew you would get together.”

“You did not.”

“I did. We both did.” She gestured to Dan in the back. I glanced at him again, but his eyes were still locked on his phone. I swear I saw a smile flash, though.

The parking area was crowded.A small stage to the left of where the trail started held the large leaderboard that would advertise the times to beat once the race was underway. Several riders milled about, pinning on their numbers or checking their bikes and water bottles. Finn and Alex were talking to a man with a notepad, probably a reporter. That must be a little weird.

Dan headed to the registration table as Angela jogged over from a couple of guys who had clearly been chatting her up. Her dark hair and golden skin turned a few heads as she walked by.

“Hey,” Angela said.

“Finn kissed Emily,” Carrie announced. Sheesh.

“Finally,” Angela said. “The sexual tension pinging between you two was tangible.”

Oh. “I thought I was doing a better job of hiding it.”

Angela laughed. “You weren’t doing too bad. Finn was about to explode.”

Well, that made my insides flutter. I wanted him to explode inside me as soon as this friggin’ race was over.

“I hope you’re ready for something,” Angela continued. “I haven’t seen Finn actually date in a long time and not because he didn’t have offers.”

I wasn’t sure why he chose me, but I was so glad he did. I wasted too much heartache and time on Joel, but not anymore, starting tonight.

It was hard to believe Finn didn’t date much. What if Finn didn’t want anyone to know about us? Maybe no one saw him with anyone because he wanted to keep that side of his life private.

I scrambled. “The kiss was sort of sudden. We didn’t talk about what it means yet. So don’t say anything.”

“No problem. I’m sure it will be out in the open soon enough. Finn’s not big on secrets.”

Alex looked over from where he and Finn stood, then he spoke to Finn, who glanced my way. His eyes held mine a moment more than I would have considered friendly. He excused himself from the reporter and walked toward me with an intense gaze. His long legs ate up the ground in powerful strides. God, he looked good.

All I knew of Finn’s thoughts about last night was that it was not a onetime thing. Thank God. Feeling him against my body and hearing his promises, I knew in my soul he was the man to bring out all my sexiness. I. Could. Not. Wait.

“Good morning.” He kissed me on the cheek and lingered a moment, our breath mingling. Not the tongue tangling kiss I experienced last night, but still hot in a sweet way. I wanted to climb him like a tree. This was a family event, so I reined it in.

“Here’s your number. I’ll pin it on your back.” His voice was low and sultry. To others, he may have sounded calm. To me, he sounded dangerous and so tempting.

“Thank you,” was all I could squeak out. The breeze carried his clean, woodsy scent to me, and I wanted to bury my nose in his neck like I did last night.
