Well, damn, he cut to the chase. Maybe that’s the badass deal-maker side.
Me:Not sure it’s a good idea to fall in love with her.
Lucas:They say love is always a good idea. I wouldn’t know.
Me:You never stay with someone long enough to fall in love.
Lucas:You may be right.
Me:She comes from money and that lifestyle. How could she be happy with me on this farm forever? It may just be fuckbuddies with her.
Lucas:Fuckbuddies with Emily would be awesome!
Me:Watch it.
Lucas:Okay, serious now. First, she doesn’t strike me as the type. I would have been all over her if she were. Truth. It’s not who she is and good for her. Second, does it feel like that to you? You’ve been there.
Me:No. It’s different.
Lucas:I’ve seen you together. She’s in it too.
God, I wanted to believe that, but something kept nagging at me. Fuck, I was all in my head over this girl.
Me:I think she’s hiding something. She talks about her past in bullet points. Her brother. Her parents. Their vacations here. There’s something she’s not saying and whatever it is, it’s bad.
Lucas:What could Emily be hiding that she wouldn’t have let slip already? You know where she lives. She’s not married. You know where she works. She isn’t running. You’ve met her dad.
Me:She’s hard to read sometimes. She’s 100 percent in for now, but she hasn’t mentioned taking things forward.
Lucas:Maybe she assumes you don’t want that. A lot of guys our age don’t.
Me:A lot of guys our age aren’t taking over a family business and starting a new one. When it comes to responsibilities, I’m forty.
Lucas:You’re overthinking this, like everything else. You think too much.
Me:You don’t think enough.
Lucas:My bank account says I’m doing something right.
Me:Cut it out. You sound like a rich jackass.
Lucas:I’ll always be your rich jackass.
Me:How about you be my brother. I need some advice.
He may act like he’s twelve and be a jackass, but he was intelligent and decent underneath all that. Always had been.
Lucas:Okay, you like her. You may love her. That’s a big deal. You’re a good guy. You deserve to be happy and she can help with that.
Me:What if you’re wrong?
Lucas:I’m rarely wrong. Seriously, she cares about you, and she brings out a better you. Like Mom does for Dad. You can’t fake that.
Lucas:Speaking of. What’s going on with Mom and Dad? I talked to her Sunday. She made a barely veiled request for me to come home more.
Me:Mom wants Dad to slow down. Hand off more to me, to us. He’s resisting.
Me:Maybe if you’re here more, he’ll get serious. I guess it’s not enough that I live here.
