I smile and hold up my phone for Rand and Mads, who swoon with me. We make our way across the hall to poker night, and I decide to shelve any decisions on an escort for now.

But it’s not the worst idea.

I’ve gotold fashioneds on the menu for the card game tonight. I decided to use blood oranges, and the case delivered this morning is perfection. If only everything else in my life didn’t feel like it was spinning out of control.

“Hey, boss. Need help with anything?” Anthony asks, strolling in.

We exchange a quick hug and I kiss his cheek. “You’re here early.”

“Rand and Ford are hanging with Mads across the hallway, and it made me think that I needed to check in on you.”

“Why would you need to check on me?”

“Because those three hadn’t planned to get together, and an unplanned hangout means there’s news of note.”

He accompanies this proclamation with an eyebrow raise.

“Anthony, I do love how you’ve become the building gossip.”

He ignores my teasing and joins me in the kitchen. Grabbing a decent bourbon and two tumblers, he pours two fingers in each and nudges a glass toward me.

“Drink.”

“Pushy bastard,” I mutter, taking a healthy sip.

“Another.”

“Jesus Christ.” Despite my protest, I down the rest of it.

Damn, that was smooth.

He takes a sip, refills my drink, and stands there, patiently waiting.

Jesus,Mary,and Joseph.

Fine.

Looking off to the side, I admit, “He’s interested.”

“Who is interested? In what?” Anthony asks dryly.

“Ford. In me.”

“Congratulations. Tell me something I don’t know. What makes you think—”

“We kissed the other night,” I spit out. “After the dinner that went sideways.”

“You’ve been holding out on me?” he asks, knocking into my shoulder.

“I dunno. I want to…it feels very precious. Like maybe he’s the one.”

Anthony pulls me into a hug, and…fine. I let myself be hugged.

Pulling away, he asks, “Why do you look like you’ve just been to a wake? Isn’t this what you wanted?”
