He walks off, and I make a call. I don’t have much time to prepare for this Rogues’ Masquerade, and I want to make it a special night for both of us.

Time to pull out all the stops.

LUCA

Mary, looking awfully nervous, knocks on my door. It’s been a long day, what with deciding which illegal things I’m willing to do today.

“Sir, my apologies for disturbing you.”

“Mary, it takes you longer to apologize for disturbing me than to give me the message. Next time, just come in with the information. Sound good?”

She takes a breath and nods, then steps forward, placing a piece of paper in front of me. “You asked me to let you know if any weird requests came in for the night crew. I wasn’t snooping around or anything, but I could tell you would want to know about this one,” she says, using her finger to push it to the edge of the desk in front of me.

I pick up the order, snarling when I read it. I glance up at her, then glare at the piece of paper.

“I don’t know this name, but why does this look familiar?”

“Look at the address.”

Refocusing, I…what the fuck? Mary also schedules my security and is familiar with all the places I frequently visit.

“Cancel this order. And pay Tristan for his time.”

“Of course, sir. Would you like me to call the, uh, client, sir?”

My head is a whirl and my heart…hurts. “No. I’ll take care of it myself.”

She swallows, then nods. “Of course. When should I have the car come pick you up?”

I shake my head. “I’ll drive myself over. Mary, can you also please cancel the rest of my evening?”

“Certainly,” she responds quickly, pushing her hair over her ear with a shaky hand.

“Mary, you didn’t do anything wrong. You put two and two together and gave me the information. That’s the kind of attention to detail that saves our skins. Keep it up.”

Her eyes hit the ground as a pleased blush colors her cheeks. “Thank you, sir.”

“The name is Luca, Mary. Not sir.”

“Of course.Luca.”

I grab my coat, knowing it’s going to be a chilly night, then straighten the few items on my desk. Mary stops me as I start to walk out of my office.

“Sir?Sorry. Luca? Your keys?”

She holds them up for me, and I smile, letting out a frustrated sigh.

“Of course. Not going to get very far without those. Thank you, Mary.”

I grab the keys and head toward the staircase, deciding I need about twenty floors’ worth of jogging to work out this frustration.

It’s not all that effective.

By the time I get to the bottom of the stairwell, I’m sweaty and horny and so goddamn frustrated I don’t know what to do with myself. I take a deep breath, then another.I thought we’d gotten somewhere.

There’s got to be a reason he’s done this.
