“Stop saying her name!” Meredith screams.
I try to get her to calm down, and she demands Thursday back.
Thursday. Why the fuck did I ever tell her she could see me on Thursdays? I should have figured out she was a lunatic.
A smack ricochets through the phone, followed by a gasp.
“Meredith. What are you doing?” I sternly inquire.
“Giving her what is owed to her,” Meredith sneers, and I hear Vivian whimper in pain. “She needs to pay for stealing my day.”
“Don’t hurt her,” I yell into the phone.
“Shut up about her!” Meredith yells, and I hear the smacking sound again.
Think, Chase.
“Meredith, take me off the speaker.” My gut flips.
“Chase, it’s just us now,” she coos.
I hate having to do it, but I need to get Meredith on my side.
“Promise me you won’t hurt her until I get there and can watch. You’re right. She took your Thursday, and she needs to pay. But we need to do it together, just you and me.” I feel sick saying it, but I don’t see any other way to get Meredith to stop hurting Vivian.
“Okay. I promise you, baby. I’ll wait. But you can’t come with anyone else. If you bring anyone else, I’ll shoot her first then myself.”
Oh fuck.
“You can’t do that. We can’t be together if you do that. I don’t have my car here. My driver will have to come for me.”
“Driver? But—”
“Don’t worry. He will stay in the car. Then when we are done teaching her a lesson, he can drive you and me back to Chicago so you can see my new place.” I hope Meredith is buying it.
It must be working because Meredith giggles.
I hurry to say, “Remember, I want to watch. If you’re going to be my girl, you have to promise me you will wait for me. Don’t touch her anymore until I get there. Then we can do it all together. Isn’t that what’s important. Us together?” I swallow down the bile that’s rising in my throat.
“Okay, I promise you I won’t do anything to her until you’re here to watch. You’re right. It’s better if we do it together. You can have your driver bring you here, but that’s the only other person.”
“Good girl. I’m going to give you an extra reward when I see you. Text me the address.”
She giggles some more. “Okay. I’ll do that now. Are you leaving soon?”
“As soon as my driver gets here and you text me the address. Promise me again that you won’t touch her and will wait for me to get there.”
“I promise, baby. It’s about an hour out of the city. I’ll see you then.” She makes kissing noises and hangs up.
I hang up the phone. “Fuck,” I yell. I dial Noah.
“Chase—”
“I need your car. Meredith has Vivian. I can’t bring anyone else besides a driver, or she’ll kill Vivian.”
“Holy shit.”
“Please. I need your car and Royce will drive to take me to them.”
