“Fine. Just need coffee.” I use the excuse again.

He pauses a moment, licks his lips then kisses me on the forehead. “Okay, let’s go.”

Relieved, I let him guide me through my building and outside. The restaurant is just around the corner, and we are soon sitting across from each other in a booth.

The waitress fills our coffee cups and takes our orders. When she leaves, Chase sits back into the booth with his hands locked behind his head, smiling. “You look beautiful.”

“Can we go back to the friend zone? I can’t do this right now,” I blurt out.

His face falls. “So, I misunderstood things, and you didn’t like kissing me last night?”

“I didn’t say that.”

“Then why are you telling me to go back to the friend zone?”

I sigh. “I told you I’m not going to be a number.”

“And I told you that you have never been and will never be a number.”

I roll my eyes.

“Why are you doing that?”

“That’s what you have, Chase. Numbers. I’m not going to be one of your girls.”

“Ah. I see. You think I consider the other girls I’ve been with numbers?”

I sarcastically laugh. “Let me rephrase it then. I’m not going to be a day of the week.”

Chase closes his eyes briefly. “So, this is about Meredith?”

“And Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.”

He chuckles.

“I don’t see what’s so funny.”

“I’m not that big a whore.”

“No?” I raise an eyebrow.

“I don’t have a girl for every day of the week.”

“Meredith said Thursday was her day. It sounded like you have a schedule going.”

“She needed boundaries.”

I recoil in shock. “She needed boundaries?”

“Yes. But why are you worried about Meredith?”

“Why am I worried about her? Have you cut it off with her?”

“No, I’ve not cut it off with her,” he says like it isn’t a big deal.

My heart sinks. I don’t even know why I’m going down this path with Chase. He’s obviously incapable of monogamy. It’s never going to be Vivian, so stop anything more than friendship with him while you can.

“Haven’t you ever had friends with benefits?” he asks.
