Page 45 of Committed to You

No one important.I cringe as it comes out of my mouth. But that’s what I need to do. Reframe my thinking when it comes to Chase.

She waves me off. “You’re a busy agent, and that’s what I want. Answer your call.”

“No, it’s okay. You’re my priority right now.”

My call rings again, and I’m about to send it to voice mail again when Misty grabs my phone and hits the answer button. She hands it to me and points to the other room. “Go take your call.”

I say, “Hold on,” into the phone then walk into the other room and shut the door. Taking a deep breath, I put the phone to my ear and quietly, but sternly, say, “I asked you for once just to let me have a break. What part of that don’t you understand? You’re interrupting my work.”

“This isn’t about us. There’s been an accident,” Chase’s voice comes through the phone.

The hair on my neck stands up, and I sit down on the couch. “What’s going on?”

“Charlotte was hit by a car.”

“What? She was already in an accident this year,” I say, which makes no sense.

“Where are you, Vivian?”

“At my listing appointment, in the downtown area. Is she okay?”

“We’re on our way to the hospital. The ambulance just left with her and Xander in it.”

“You and Xander were with her?” I ask, confused.

“It’s a long story. I’ll tell you in person.”

Tears flow out of my eyes as it hits me. “Chase, is Charlotte okay?”

“I think she will be, but they’re assessing her. She was going in and out of consciousness when the ambulance left.”

Panic grows in me. “Is she going to have brain injuries like Xander?” I cry out.

“Vivian, I need you to stay calm right now.”

“Is that a yes?”

“Vivian, where are you? Let me come get you.”

“So, she is going to have brain injuries?” Tears are running down my cheeks at full speed now.

“I didn’t say that.”

“But you didn’t say no.”

“We don’t know the extent of her injuries until they assess her. We all need to stay calm.”

“Don’t tell me to stay calm. Charlotte’s my best friend. She got hit by a car, and you’re not telling me what’s wrong with her,” I spit out.

His voice gets quieter. “Vivian, where are you? I just dropped Noah and Jamison off at the hospital. I’m coming to get you.”

“No. I don’t need you to do that. I’m fine.”

“Stop. Tell me where you are.”

I take a deep breath. “I’m listing a condo on Michigan Avenue.”

“I’m not far from there. I’m in Noah’s car. Send me the address. Wait in the lobby, and I’ll come get you.”
