Piper gives me a sympathetic look and squeezes my hand. “What happened?”
“Saturday night, I gave him an ultimatum, and he didn’t choose me. Then we got into it on the way to the hospital, and I said some nasty things.”
“What did you say?”
“Something along the lines that he is a user and takes what he needs and only gives scraps. And that I was done and worth more than his scraps.” I shoot Piper a guilty look. “Then he said he was going to make things right between us, and would I let him make it right.”
“What did you say?”
“I agreed, but I don’t know what that means. So now I feel I’m back in limbo. I’m setting myself up to be let down again, and every time he lets me down, my heart rips into more pieces.”
Piper carefully says, “Why don’t you call him and ask him what make it right means?”
“He’s coming to town Friday, and I agreed to talk to him then.”
“Why is he coming to town?”
“To visit properties for their expansion.”
Piper nods. “Vivian, are you in love with Chase?”
I bite my lip. “I wish I could say no to that.”
“I think Chase is in love with you,” she says quietly.
I jerk my head at Piper. “He’s got a funny way of showing it if he is. Why would you even think that?”
Piper laughs softly. “Chase was flipping out, driving everyone batty, when he found out you had a date.”
“Jealousy and love are two different things.”
“I think he was jealous because he loves you.”
“Or just a total hypocrite, expecting me not to date anyone while he does his calendar full of women.”
“Do you really think he has a calendar full of women? According to Jamison, that isn’t true.”
“Jamison is probably just covering for him,” I quickly say.
“Why would Jamison lie to Noah?”
I shrug.
“I don’t think he’s covering or lying. And Noah said he told him that he screwed up with you and was going to do everything to fix it.”
“When was that?”
“Noah thought it was the minute he stepped off the plane.”
“I’m not sure how he’s going to fix it. He’s incapable of committing. That’s the only way to fix it,” I tell Piper.
“Chase’s problem isn’t committing, it’s trusting someone again,” Piper tells me.
I furrow my brow at her. “What are you talking about?”
“Noah and Jamison told me why he has his girls.”
“And?”
