Piper laughs. “Maybe he was nervous meeting all of us?”
“It doesn’t matter. I’m not interested in giving him false hope. The only person I want to take me is Chase, and that isn’t happening.”
“So, you aren’t taking anyone?”
“No.”
“What about a friend?”
“Too much work. I’m capable of going by myself. I don’t need someone by my side just to have someone there. If they don’t mean anything to me, then what’s the point?”
“True.”
“Is Quinn bringing a date?”
“I don’t know.”
“Maybe I’ll have her or my mom sit next to me at the table. You and Noah can keep my dad company?”
Piper smiles. “Sure.”
“I’m assuming Charlotte won’t be coming now.”
Piper shrugs. “You never know. She might be okay and ready to leave the house for a few hours.”
“I hope she has a quick recovery. I still can’t believe she got into another accident this year.”
“Yeah, it’s crazy. So…”
“What?”
“What did Chase say when you told him about your award?”
“I never told him.”
Piper’s eyes widen. “Why didn’t you tell him?”
“What was the point? He isn’t my boyfriend. What would he care?”
“I think he would care.”
“Doubt it. It doesn’t involve his life or getting in my pants.”
Piper tilts her head.
“What?”
“Do you really believe that?”
I shrug. “I’m not sure what I believe anymore.”
Piper’s alarm rings. “I have to go. We have a staff meeting. Try to keep an open mind until you talk on Friday. I know it seems bad right now, but if you love him, give it one more shot.”
“Since when did you become a Chase fan?”
She laughs. “I wouldn’t say fan quite yet, but he grew on me when I saw him with you this weekend. Plus, speaking from experience, it’s a lot better to be in love and with the person than in love and not with the person.”
“Both people have to want to be together for that to happen.”
