Quinn looks at me. “What’s he doing?”

“Nothing you need to worry about, doll. Just trying to get his way.”

Cindy pats Quinn’s hand. “It’s best if we just stay out of it. Leave Jamison and Valeria to deal with him. Unfortunately, he’s the thorn in their marriage that pokes them every now and then.”

Quinn shifts in her seat. “Pokes them?”

Seriously, Cindy? Did you have to say that?

“What’s he doing?” Quinn asks again.

Valeria and I look at each other. We don’t usually tell Cindy what is going on and handle things quietly. I don’t want Quinn worrying about this.

“He’s just being my father,” Valeria quickly states.

“That’s the truth,” I say.

“Does this have to do with him wanting you to run the business?” Quinn asks.

“How do you know about that?”

“You were talking about it the night I found out about...about...” She points between Valeria and me.

I never thought about what we were talking about that night. I was just worried about trying to figure out how to stop her from hurting and not leave me.

“He wants you to take over the business?” Cindy says, surprised.

Valeria and I both nod.

“In order for me to get my inheritance,” Valeria adds.

“What is he doing?” Quinn asks.

“Nothing I can’t handle,” I say.

Quinn doesn’t say anything.

Crap. This is not good.

“Let’s change the subject,” Valeria suggests.

Quinn stands up. “Excuse me. I need to use the restroom.” She walks away.

“She’s beautiful, Jamison,” Cindy says.

I beam at her and agree.

“My father isn’t going to just stop.”

“I’m going to go use the restroom. You two talk.” Cindy gets up to leave.

“Thanks, darling,” Valeria tells her. When Cindy is out of earshot, Valeria continues. “I think we need to figure out why he doesn’t want Santiago to run things anymore. I wonder if my mama knows something.”

“You told her you don’t need the inheritance?”

“Yes. She told my father to forget his promise to her.”

“But he isn’t?”
