“Yes.”

“I think for me it was having to make sure we had the best paramedics, reliable vehicles, technology, contracts with the hospitals, etc. People’s lives are at stake, so the responsibility was bigger than when I was the one person going on one call. Now I’m responsible for making sure thousands of calls a day get answered and the attention they need.”

She finally says, “That sounds like a scary leap to me.”

“I suppose.”

“What made you leap?”

“It was time. Noah had moved on. Xander was a doctor. Chase and I were running multiple crews for the company and saw ways we could expand and make things more efficient. When the opportunity came up, we took it. Then we started making our own opportunities by buying out the majority of the investors and keeping the ones we wanted on our team.”

Her bright-blue eyes stare at me. “So, you just went for it?”

“Yep.”

“Hmm.”

“Tell me what kind of books you write.”

She hesitates.

“Tell me,” I urge her.

“I wrote a series of thrillers, a few romantic comedies, and I dabbled in urban fantasy for a bit.”

She writes thrillers? No freaking way.

“You hid that little piece of information last night.”

She takes a sip of beer and doesn’t say anything.

“I want to read what you wrote.”

“No way!”

“Why not? I love thrillers. Let me start with those.”

“I’m not an author. I submitted my books. No one picked me up.”

“So? One person read it and decided to give the book deal to a known name or some other story that resonated with them. It doesn’t mean yours suck.”

“Or maybe it does.”

“Let me read it. I’ll be the judge.”

“Absolutely not.”

“You won’t let me read one?”

“No.”

“What if I give you favors in exchange.”

She tilts her head. “Do I even want to know what that means?”

“You pick. For every book you let me read, I’ll owe you a favor.”

Quinn peers at me. “Is this a sexual thing?”
