“Steven, drop the attitude. Don’t work with him, and let it go.”

“He’s harassing me.”

“I’ll talk to him.”

A new feeling of dread washes over me. My mother is his personal assistant. They may be having an ongoing affair, but she has always been a hard worker and takes her role seriously. “What are you involved in?”

My mother’s eyes widen. “Nothing.”

“Then what do you know you aren’t disclosing?”

“I’ll talk to your father and tell him you aren’t working with him. Let’s go celebrate Quinn and Jamison.”

“Mom—”

“End of conversation, Steven.” She leaves the room.

What has he gotten her involved in?

I always hated my mother working for him, but if he got her involved in something, I’m going to personally be responsible for his demise.

Several minutes pass. I don’t move, for fear of how angry I am. This isn’t the time to lash out at my mother.

You did enough damage yesterday at Quinn’s wedding.

Add it to the list of ways you hurt her.

I smell Harper but don’t open my eyes. I’m still trying to calm down when her fingers lace into my hair, and her lips kiss the beating pulse on my neck.

I selfishly keep my lids shut and let her kiss me some more but slide my arms around her.

“Do you want to get out of here? You can ice your thighs at your place?” she murmurs then continues bestowing the gift of her mouth on my skin.

My rage weakens, and my erection takes over, and she presses harder against it. I groan.

“They’ll be here all day. We won’t miss much.” Her lips move over my clenched jaw, and one lonesome finger traces the other side.

I palm her head and open my eyes, briefly locking on hers before gliding my tongue in her mouth. Her heart pounds hard against mine, and her knees buckle, but I hold her tight to me. And all my wrath melts.

“Should we go?” she whispers.

“Yeah.”

I reluctantly let her go, and she steps back. “I didn’t tell you how beautiful you look today.”

“Thanks. Come on.”

We go into the other room.

“Steven didn’t pack stuff for the week. I’m going with him to his place, and we’ll be back soon,” she announces.

I avoid the raised eyebrows and especially don’t look at Jamison or Quinn.

For the millionth time, I ask myself,What am I doing with Harper?

She’s beyond a perfect ten, sweet, and seems into me.

And it can’t go anywhere.
