"Work, work, work," Harper teases and claps.
I jump, startled. "Oh my gosh. You scared the crap out of me!"
She laughs. "Sorry. Couldn't resist. Viktor let me up. By the way, I think I'm wearing him down. I got a happy grunt today."
I snort. "Progress."
"Yeah." She sets the things she's carrying on the table. Then she pins her green eyes on me. "Is Mitch still threatening you?"
"No. Why?"
She wrinkles her forehead. "Then why did I have to go through Viktor after I got past another guy... Peter, I think the building security called him? The other night was the same for the party."
Oh, crap. Why did I say Mitch wasn't threatening me again?
Silence ensues, and Harper tilts her head.
"What's going on, Anna?"
"Nothing." I hate lying to her.
"Anna, something is going on. I'm not a moron."
"I never said you were."
"Okay, then tell me."
My pulse beats so hard in my neck, I cover it with my hand in fear she will see it. "Dmitri is cautious, that's all."
"About what?"
I turn away, not sure how to answer her.
She sits in the chair next to mine and puts her hand over my tapping fingers. "I've known you for a long time, Anna. I know when you lie. Right now, your body language leads me to believe something is going on. Whatever it is, tell me."
I close my eyes, trying to gather my thoughts.
Why wasn't I prepared for this?
"Is someone threatening you?"
"No."
"Someone is coming after Dmitri?"
I sigh. "Things are going on, yes."
"Is this why you didn't come to Vivian's?"
I turn to her. "Yes. Dmitri doesn't want me to leave the penthouse right now. But please don't tell her or my brother. Or anyone else. I don't want it advertised or anyone to worry."
She nods. "I won't. You have my word."
"Thank you."
"So...what is going on?"
"I can't get into it."
