Dmitri says, "Anna—"
"Where did you say the pencil and paper was?"
He sighs. "In my office. The top desk drawer."
"It's okay for me to get it?"
"Yes, of course."
I smile. "Okay." I leave the room and go into the office, giving myself a pep talk.
I can do this. It's two units, the first-floor lobby and gathering area, common area bathrooms, hallways, and elevators.
Oh God. Why did I promise that?
What was I thinking?
Freaking out won't get things done. Better get to work.
I open the desk drawer, get the items I need, and go back to the living room.
"Triple? Who does he think we are?" Dmitri angrily barks.
"He also offered to buy our lots off us for what we paid, but the offer is only good for seventy-two hours. After that, he starts dropping the price," Maksim growls.
"Cocksucker is trying to railroad us."
"Boris isn't happy."
Dmitri's voice lowers. "He needs to keep his head about him. We don't need trouble with the Rossi family."
The hairs on my arm stand up.The Italian mob? Why is Dmitri involved with them?
I really don't know anything about him.
Maksim clears his throat and stares at me.
"Sorry. I-I didn't mean to interrupt."
Dmitri spins. Anger is in his eyes. It's not meant for me. I know that, but I don't like seeing it.
He's dangerous. I felt it from the start with him.Am I going from one bad man to another?
"You've done nothing to apologize for, kotik."
"Kotik?" Maksim says, raising his eyebrows and scowling at Dmitri.
Scorching heat crawls up my face. There's no way to deny to Maksim something is going on between Dmitri and me. I'm not sure if Dmitri wants to keep us a secret or not, but I didn't want his brothers to think he hired me to get in my pants.
Did he?
Why am I questioning everything all of a sudden?
He's doing something with the mob. Are his businesses legit, or is he a criminal?
My stomach flips. I turn and sit at the table, open my laptop, and try to concentrate.
I tell myself to focus. But it's impossible not to listen to the rest of the conversation.
