"And we just started dating, so don't go planning any weddings anytime soon."
She raises her eyebrows.
"Why are you looking at me like that?"
"That man looked at you like you were a prize possession he adores. And you've never looked at anyone you've dated like you look at him."
"Like what?"
"Gaga eyes. You two are in love. You're getting married someday. I can tell."
I groan. "Harper, we just met."
"So? What does that have to do with it? Dmitri doesn't seem to me like a man who doesn't know what he wants."
"Want and love are two different things."
"Are they?"
"Harper? Anna? Please follow me," a woman with pink hair and a big smile says.
We get up, and I'm relieved to end the conversation. She has us sit in pedicure chairs next to each other. We spend the next few hours getting our feet and hands pampered and then we go into the salon portion of the building. By the time we get there, we've had several glasses of champagne, and I'm feeling pretty tipsy.
"Looks like you're here for the Fall Makeover?"
"Yep! Bring it on," I say.
"Great. Is it okay if I turn your chair so you don't see anything until the end?"
"Sure."
Harper is in the seat next to me, and we spend the next few hours laughing more and eating the cheese and crackers they serve us with more champagne.
"Holy smokes! You look hot!" Harper exclaims when the stylist turns the dryer off.
Excitement builds, and the stylist spins the chair. My mouth drops open. I stare at my reflection.
My hair is dark, with several highlights around my face. Even my eyebrows were dyed darker.
I turn to Harper.
"What do you think?" she says. "Amazing, isn't it?"
"I'm not blonde!"
"No! But you look awesome!"
I turn back to the mirror. I've never been anything but blonde. A few years ago, I wanted to experiment with hair colors, but Mitch didn't want me to.
Dmitri likes my blonde hair. What is he going to think?
"Why do you look upset? Your blue eyes pop like crazy with that color! She did a great job," Harper says.
I look at the stylist. "I'm sorry. I just... I've never been anything but blonde."
"Did they not tell you at the front desk what the Fall Makeover is?"
"No."
