"Sure."

He pulls a thick thorn out of my foot, washes it, then sprays it and puts a bandage over it. "You don't have any shoes?"

"No."

"Let me get you a pair of socks so you can at least walk in the tent without a greater chance of infection."

"Okay."

He digs in a bag then pulls a pair out.

"Thanks."

"Thank Axel. They're his."

"Gotcha."

Emilia and I talk a bit more then I get up and start to pace.

I need to figure out if they are Global Leaders or not.

Where is my daughter?

How am I going to find her now?

What if Santiago hurts her now that I'm gone?

Everyone clears out of the tent, but I'm so lost in thought, I don't notice. When I look up, the room is empty, and Axel is back to looking at me like I'm his dinner.

You're imagining things.

His deep voice makes my loins throb some more. "You seem a bit stressed."

I take a deep breath and lie. "I'm fine."

He tilts his head and squints. "I don't think so."

"Where are you taking me?"

"I don't know yet. I'll find out. I promise."

"When?"

"Tomorrow, Interpol will send coordinates. As soon as I know, I'll tell you."

"Why didn't you rescue us sooner?"

His eyes widen. "I didn't know you existed until earlier today. If I knew about you, I would have found you, with or without Interpol's direction." Heat flares in his eyes, and flutters take off in my gut.

He seems sincere.

It could be a lie.

"Do you know my name?"

"Penelope Chelton. You're thirty-five, from England, work at the U.K. embassy in Panama City, have two older sisters, and a mother back home. Your boss, William Davies, reported you missing."

Nothing about Millie?
