Ben gives me a grin. “Why not? Your mom is still there, right? I bet she would have your balls if she wasn’t there to see you start your first game of the season.”

I let out a laugh. “She will definitely be pissed if she missed it.”

“Then it's settled then. You’re getting your first start in July.”

Fuck that feels so good to hear.

I stand up and extend my hand out for ben. “Thank you, sir. You have no idea how much this means to me.”

He shakes my hand. “You’re working hard for it. You still have a lot of work to do, and a lot to prove. So keep doing what you’re doing.”

“Of course.” Anything to get my career back to what it once was.

“I also see that things are going good with that ‘girlfriend’ of yours. I’m glad you followed my advice.”

I can’t help but roll my eyes at the man as he says the word girlfriend as if it had quotations around it.

Yeah, it was his idea, but I’m not going to thank him for it. It will go to his head.

“Anything else you’d like to talk to me about?” I ask, standing up and grabbing my bag from the floor.

Ben looks at the time on his watch, his tattoos peeking out from under his dress shirt. It still trips me out that the guy has full sleeves and hand tattoos.

“No, that's it. I’ll walk out with you.”

I wait for him to grab his stuff and within a few minutes were walking out of the clubhouse.

We run into Aaron in the corridor and the three of us walk out of the stadium.

Before I reach my car, the one I bought at the beginning of the month because I was tired of being driven around, I shoot off a text to Jen..

She had texted me right before the game ended that they wouldn’t be making it, so I figure since they weren’t able to make the game, I’d invite her and her friends to dinner.

Crashing on the couch can wait a few hours.

“Any plans, boys?” Ben asks as he slings his bag into the bed of his truck.

“I have a tea party with my daughter. You know for a fact that there will be a picture of me wearing a tiara and a feather boa on my wife’s Instagram later.”

“Oh if she does, I’m definitely taking a screenshot of that and putting it up in the clubhouse.” Ben roars out, hunching over just thinking about the visual.

It’s moments like these that make me happy to be on the team that has a skipper that knows how to have fun.

“What about you, Maddox?” Ben asks once he calms down a bit.

“I don’t yet, plans are still up in the air.” I look down at my phone and see that I’ve gotten a reply from Jen yet.

Yeah, I just sent the text a minute ago, she always texts me back right away.

“Just waiting for your girl to get back to you?” Aaron asks as if he knows the feeling.

“Yup.” A notification goes off and I check my phone, but there is no notification in sight.

Great, I’m turning into a teenage girl waiting for the boy that she likes to get in contact with her.

“Oh, shit.” Aaron lets out, looking at something on his phone.

“What?” I ask, because the way his face looks right now means that whatever he is looking at has to be serious.
