Ermine grasped at straws, putting document after document into evidence. Theo could only shake his head.
“Objection,” Theo said. “Calls for speculation. My client’s name is nowhere on those documents.”
“Sustained. Move it along, Mr. Ermine. My patience is wearing thin.”
Another baseless document, another objection, followed by hearsay with a sprinkle of shut the fuck up already, and finally…
“Your Honor, let’s not forget the other serious charge. The importation of—”
“You call a misdemeanor a serious charge, Mr. Ermine?” It appeared the Honorable Judge Harris had reached his limit. He ripped Ermine a new one. Several observers were asked to leave the room, unable to control their laughter.
The judge came back with his decision quickly.
“It is my ruling that the warrant was made in error. The prosecutor’s office has failed to link Mr. Petrov with any activity relating to organized crime, though I am fining him five thousand dollars for receiving food products banned in New York City. If that is all, case closed!”
Cheers and applause rang out.
“Thank you, Jensen.” Petrov shook Theo’s hand. “That was one helluva job.”
“Appreciate it. Now, are you sure you don’t want to join us on a run to test the waters? You never know, it could be fate.”
“No thanks. Turns out, my fate was sealed the first time I saw her. I got my own pride right here,” Petrov replied, referring to his mate who was heading his way.
Theo had his own mate waiting for him at her place. He and his mother had insisted on her taking an extra day off, knowing the battle she was about to face.
He’d be right there with her—every step of the way.
CHAPTER 9
Raina Hill was about to be the first witch appointed to the Council, but Ivy would have none of it.
“She doesn’t speak for us!” Ivy yelled as she entered the large meeting room. She didn’t bother to be announced as a speaker, but the members of the SCNYC were not surprised to see her. Kim had already informed them Ivy would be there today, as was her right as a fellow witch. Raina, on the other hand, was very surprised.
Ivy glared at the bitch who had killed her best friend.
“I know. I’m walking, talking, breathing, and all that.” She heard Theo’s growl behind her. She’d recognize it anywhere now. Ivy turned to see him shoving three prisoners forward. The two surviving tiger shifters who attacked her on Sunday and Delphine.
“Mercy,” one of the tigers whimpered as he dropped to his knees on the floor. “We were only supposed to scare her so she’d leave town.”
Theo pulled him back by the hair. “Who asked you to do that?” His voice was deadly.
“D-Delphine.”
The other tiger shifter frantically nodded his head in agreement.
“What did she offer you in return?” Dante asked.
“N-Nothing.”
“Nothing? I’m not buying that,” Kim chimed in.
“We weren’t gonna do it at first, I swear,” the tiger shifter said. “But then Larry told us that Delphine would fuck us.”
“I wouldn’t have, baby,” Delphine said to Theo.
Theo looked at her in disgust. Releasing the Tiger’s shifter’s hair, he walked over to Ivy and linked his hand with hers.
“You can’t possibly want to be with a witch,” Delphine shrieked.
