My laughter dies on my tongue when a group of striking women approach the table. The guys are all smiles and friendly greetings, meanwhile I’m sinking down in my seat and withdrawing completely into myself.
Do they all know each other?
There’s a blonde, a brunette, and a redhead and while that normally sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, it’s not the case here. They’re all completely flawless and I feel like an imposter here surrounded by all of these model-esque humans. Three beautiful women and twelve seconds of insecurity is all it takes for me to be back in middle school, fending off bullies left and right at the pinnacle of self-discovery.
The tinkling sounds of giggling brings me back to the present and I realize that the guys aren’t discouraging their attention at all so maybe they do know each other. I didn’t catch anyone making introductions…
“I can’t believe we’re meeting you in person. We’re likehugefans,” the blonde says, effectively shutting down my thoughts on that matter.
“Oh my god, totally!” The redhead agrees.
“Literally, we’re your biggest fans,” the brunette confesses, adjusting her dress so her cleavage is further on display. She’s not even being subtle about it.
“Fans?” I ask, confused as hell and feeling overwhelmed with other conflicting emotions.
“Um, yeah. Don’t you know who you’re sitting with?” The blonde one directs her question to me, looking at me like I’m the biggest imbecile on the planet.
“I guess I don’t,” I say, realizing the truth of it. Idon’tknow these guys anymore. Not really.
“Reckless Sin,” the brunette deadpans, her eyes widening when I don’t register the reference she’s making.
“The band. You’re sitting here with one of the hottest new up and coming bands of all time. They’re about to go on a world tour with Viper! Can you believe it?” The redhead is explaining all of this, not realizing how much each word slices into me. Here I was thinking I could finally confront my past, face my demons, and let it all go. I really thought I could find true happiness with these guys and make it all make sense in the long run, but I’ve been fooling myself.
I’m such an idiot.
“I have to get out of here,” I mumble, more to myself than anything but there’s alarm in the guys’ voices when they all make their opinions on the matter known.
“No!”
“Stay!”
“Ainsley, don’t do this.”
“Please don’t go.”
“Let us take you at least.”
I don’t register who said what, my only focus is on getting out of here before I have another panic attack. Barely registering my chair falling backwards with my hasty retreat, I make a run for the door. Thank god I wasn’t stuck in a booth or blocked in by those women like the guys were.
The fresh air greets me and I’m thankful the summer season hasn’t given way to fall quite yet. It’s not too hot and not too cold as I keep my brisk pace toward the subway. I know they’ll be close behind me but I don’t want to think of that right now. The only thing that matters is that I get back home safe and more importantly, alone.
