“It’s a gift,” Nicole says. “You’ll knock him dead with that outfit.”
I throw the phone on the bed and slip into the outfit. She’s right. I look hot. The jeans are tight against my hips, and the shirt shows off my boobs and hides my stomach. The outfit is everything I want it to be.
“You’re a miracle worker, Nic. Thank you so much!”
“You know I’m always here for you. Let me see it on you.”
I point the camera toward my full-length mirror. Nicole whistles her appreciation.
“You look hot, as usual. I wish I could be there to see Dr. Blake’s reaction.”
“You can call him AJ, you know.”
“I know, I just like saying Dr. Blake. It sounds sexier.”
I roll my eyes. “Whatever. You’re weird.”
“So are you. It’s why we’re friends.”
“True.”
“Are you excited?” Nicole asks, changing the subject. “Or more nervous than anything else?”
“I’m definitely excited. It’s our first date!”
“Do you think you’ll sleep with him again?”
I blush. I told Nicole and Daisy everything that happened at my last appointment with AJ. There was a lot of squealing and freaking out. I’m glad I decided to invite them over to my apartment that night instead of telling them in the cafeteria. We probably would’ve been kicked out.
“I don’t know. Isn’t it tacky to have sex on the first date?”
Nicole bursts out laughing. “You had sex with him at your first appointment!”
“No, I didn’t!”
“Oral sex. I still think it counts.”
“That’s beside the point. I think I’ll just see what happens. I don’t want to go into this date with any expectations.”
“You have to have some expectations. You should want to have a good time.”
“Well, of course I want to have fun. I just mean that I’m not going to get my hopes up for any intimacy. Besides, we started out so fast. It would be a good idea to slow things down.”
“Okay, that I approve of. Are you ready to go?”
“Yep. Thank you for your help, Nicole. I really appreciate it.”
She blows me a kiss. “My pleasure, Amber. I expect to hear all about the date at lunch tomorrow!”
“You will, I promise.”
We hang up, and I open my Uber app so I can call a car. I could take public transportation to the townhouse, but I’d be way late if I did that. I can spend the cash on an Uber this time.
Once the car is called, I wait outside for it to show up.
I check the address three times after I get out of my Uber, sure that I typed it in wrong. There’s no way AJ lives here.
But apparently, he does. The brownstone towers over the rest of the neighborhood.
I look down at my outfit and worry I chose wrong. Someone who lives in a house like this won’t be impressed by jeans and a plain shirt.
There’s nothing I can do about that now, though. I walk up to the door and ring the bell before I can turn tail and run.
AJ answers the door quickly, like he’s been waiting for me. I’m glad I didn’t stand out here for too long. That would’ve been embarrassing.
“Hi!” he greets, pulling me in for a somewhat awkward hug. He kisses my cheek chastely before backing away. “I’m glad you made it. Did you have any trouble getting here?”
“No, I used Uber, so it was no big deal.”
“Ah, gotcha. Well, welcome to my home.”
He gestures to the huge townhouse behind him.
“This is really your house? Damn, you must be rich.”
I slap my hand over my mouth as soon as the words escape, but it’s too late. I was only supposed to say that in my head, not out loud!
To my surprise, AJ laughs instead of sending me packing.
“Yeah, I guess you could say I am.”
“Sorry, I shouldn’t have blurted that out. It’s just, this house is so big. I’d be lying if I said I’m not intimidated.”
AJ offers me a sweet smile. “Don’t be. I have a lot of money, yes, but that’s because my business is successful. I’ve only owned this house for a few months.”
“I didn’t realize Blake Cosmeceuticals was doing so well. That’s amazing! I’m happy for you. I bet with AJB-9, you’ll get even richer.”
AJ chuckles. “We’ll see what happens. I just hope you don’t think I’m some snob. I didn’t grow up with a ton of money. And I’m not like most rich people.”
I put my hand on his arm. “I can tell you’re not. I went to a private school, so I know how awful rich people can be. I was on scholarship, for the record. My parents couldn’t have afforded the school otherwise.”
“I’m glad we’re on the same page.”
A pleasant silence falls over us. I like that it’s not awkward between us. I’d be happy to sit with AJ, neither of us talking, just enjoying our time together.
