“We believe in you,” I say.
Daisy is an incredible saleswoman. She usually exceeds her goals. The difference is, now she has to double her old goal. That’s a lot of pressure.
I’m glad marketing doesn’t do quotas. We struggle enough as it is. I’ve been working on a campaign for a spring product launch, and it’s impossible to please my boss. I’ve rewritten the ad copy at least a hundred times. I don’t know what else to do.
“You guys are the best. Just be prepared for an overly stressed Daisy for the next few weeks.”
“Your term ends at the end of the year, right?”
“Yep,” Daisy says. “I have until December 31st, but right now is prime time. Orders need to go out for the holidays, and Black Friday is coming up quickly.”
“We’ll have our daily lunches for you to rant,” Nicole promises Daisy. “You sound like you’ll need it.”
“I will. And on top of all that, Belle is sick. She’s got strep. So far, I haven’t come down with it, but I wouldn’t be surprised if I do. Jack is working from home this week to keep an eye on her.”
“Oh no! Poor Belle. Strep is the worst. I got it all the time when I was a kid.”
Strep would take me down for a week once a year, like clockwork. It was the only time my parents acted like parents. Maybe my body did it on purpose when I needed the attention.
“Yeah, she’s miserable, but she’s a trooper. She only has a few days left on her antibiotics. It just sucks seeing my baby so sick.”
I can’t imagine. I’m excited to have kids in the future and be a stay-at-home mom, but I know it won’t be easy. Sickness is just one of many things I’m terrified of.
Yet I still want it more than anything. Being a mom is what I was meant to do.
And I hope AJ is the one to make it happen.
“I hope Belle feels better soon,” Nicole says. “In other news, my mom has called me every day since I told her about the trip Josh and I are taking in December. She wants to know what our wedding plans are. I think she’s convinced we’re going to elope on the trip. We’re not even engaged!”
I can’t help but laugh. Nicole’s mom gets like this about everything, I’ve learned. Before we graduated, she called every day to make sure Nicole had all the credits she needed. It was sweet but overbearing. It reminds me of how AJ feels about his mother.
Once again, I’m back to thinking about AJ. If a scientist were to scan my brain, they’d see pictures of the sexy dermatologist.
“What about you, Amber? What news do you have to share with us?”
Nicole winks at me, knowing full well what I was just thinking about.
“Well, I had an amazing date with AJ.”
“That’s great!” Daisy says. “Where did you go?”
“We actually went to his basement.”
Daisy’s eyes widen. “That sounds equal parts creepy and sexy.”
I laugh. “No, that’s not…well, it was, but…”
“You’re blushing!” Nicole laughs. “It’s adorable.”
I cover my face with my hands. My cheeks are warm and probably bright red. This is not how I expected the conversation to go! Why am I so flustered, thinking about AJ?
“He has a bowling alley in his basement,” I explain, trying to quell my nerves. “We bowled, and then we…did some other things.”
“Girl! I thought you were going to take it slow.”
“I tried. I failed. He’s just so hot!”
“Wait, I haven’t seen him yet. I need to see him!” Daisy exclaims.
I pull out my phone and search AJ’s name. We haven’t taken any pictures together, so I have to rely on the internet. I find an extra sexy one of him in his lab coat and hold it up to Daisy.
She waves her hand in front of her face. “Oh my God. He’s the hottest. How did you get so lucky?”
The blush returns to my cheeks. “I don’t know. It just happened!”
Daisy laughs. “That’s how love always works, isn’t it?”
I wouldn’t know. This is the first time I’ve felt like this. I’ve seen my friends and my sister in love, but I’ve never experienced it myself. At least, not the romantic kind.
“He picked me up for work yesterday, too. We got coffee and talked. It was amazing.”
“No sexy time?”
“Nope. Just a quick kiss.”
Nicole grins. “So you are capable of being together without having sex.”
“It’s difficult, but yeah, we managed.”
“I’m proud of you. He didn’t pick you up today?”
I shake my head. “The train is much easier and quicker, but we aren’t coming from the same place, so it’s complicated.”
Daisy wiggles her brows. “Well, you’ll just have to stay over at his place every once in a while.”
“I don’t know about that.”
“Why not?”
I shrug. “That seems like it would be moving even faster, and I really am trying to slow it down. I don’t want to risk screwing anything up.”
