Daisy can see the change in my eyes. She holds out her hands to pull me up. I let her and Nicole drag me into my bathroom. They turn on the water and leave.
“Don’t come out until your hair is clean!”
I can’t help but laugh as I undress and climb into the shower. My hair is a tangled mess. I comb through it with conditioner while the water runs over my body.
Nicole and Daisy are right. I need to do this. My hair deserves better than the way I’ve been treating it all week. Sure, I often go a few days without washing it, but I brush it every day. This week, I’ve neglected to do even that.
I step out of the shower feeling like a new person. It’s amazing what clean hair can do for you.
Wrapping myself up in a towel, I head into my bedroom to find some pajamas to put on. Instead, Nicole and Daisy are standing by my bed with an outfit set out for me.
“I’m not wearing that to watch movies on my couch,” I say. “I know you think looking good changes your mood, but I really don’t need to look good for Netflix.”
“Did you really think we came all the way here to throw you in the shower just so you could go back to watching your sappy love movies?”
“Well, yeah.”
Daisy rolls her eyes. “You know us better than that, Amber.”
“Well, I hoped. You guys can stay and watch with me. It’ll be fun.”
Nicole shakes her head. “You’ve been holed up in this apartment for far too long. It’s unhealthy. We’re taking you out.”
I frown. “I don’t want to go out. I want to wallow.”
“We let you wallow for days. Now it’s time to go out. Jasmine and Tammy are meeting us at the bar in an hour. You have to get ready.”
I study the outfit my friends picked out for me. The jeans are my favorite pair. They somehow make my chunky ass look hot. They chose a shirt from my closet with a plunging neckline but long sleeves. My friends know the kind of clothes that make me the most comfortable. The outfit is sexy yet conservative at the same time.
“Put it on,” Daisy orders, squeezing my shoulder. “It’s part two in the Make Amber Feel Better plan.”
A laugh escapes my lips. “You guys have a plan?”
“Please. Of course we have a plan.”
“We do not have a plan,” Nicole admits. “Not a full-fledged one, at least. This is a half-assed attempt, just like everything else we do.”
“You could’ve been on my side!”
“I don’t want Amber to think we made a plan because then, she might expect us to plan things in the future.”
Daisy nods. “You’re right. I didn’t think about that. Planning is all you, Amber. We’re just here to get you to the bar.”
I haven’t taken my eyes off the clothes. The girls even picked a bra and panties for me to wear, and they match. I’m not surprised.
“I don’t know about this. I’ve showered. You guys can go have fun with Tammy and Jasmine. I think I’m going to stay here and watch a few more movies…”
Daisy is shaking her head before I finish my declaration. “We’re not taking no for an answer. Put the clothes on, or we’ll put them on for you.”
Her threat is sincere. Sighing, I send Nicole and Daisy into the living room so I can change without their prying eyes. I check myself out in the mirror quickly before joining them. I look hot.
Too bad I don’t feel that way.
Daisy and Nicole blow dry and curl my hair and then apply a small amount of makeup to my face. I don’t bother with another look in the mirror. I’m sure I look fine. Not that it matters.
Fall has a hold on the city, so we take a cab to the bar instead of walking in the cool, night air. When we arrive, Tammy and Jasmine already have a table.
Despite my stomach being full of ice cream, I’m starving. I order a hamburger and fries, as well as a vodka soda. If my friends are going to force me to go out, I’m going to enjoy myself.
After we’ve ordered and settled into our spots at the table, the four girls turn their attention on me.
“Okay. It’s time to talk. What happened with you and AJ?”
I bite my lip. I want to tell them, but I can’t. Part of the reason I’ve been avoiding my friends is that I don’t know how to explain the situation without telling them what AJ did.
“It’s complicated,” is what I finally manage.
Daisy isn’t having any of that. “Then uncomplicate it. You were crazy excited about going to your appointment. You were going to tell him about your feelings. What happened? Did he react poorly?”
