“Thanks for saving our asses,” he says.
I turn to face the other two again. Viktor’s gaze slides away from my face to look at something behind me. Without a word, he gives the three of us a wide berth as he moves away. Theo, on the other hand, stays where he is, still watching me.
“I suppose you have a few questions,” I hedge.
He hasn’t skewered me or started yelling yet. Is that a good sign or a bad one? Theo has always been hard to read.
“I’ve had questions for a while now. Tonight has only created more of them.” His voice is strained as his eyes drift over me. “We should go before the authorities get here.”
I blink.
“That’s it? We just head home?”
Theo looks perplexed. “That’s it, unless you have something else in mind.”
“Don’t you want to ask me some of your questions?” I demand. I’m not certain why I’m a little annoyed. I should be relieved he’s not interested in digging into what the hell I just managed to do. Or trying to stab me with that blood covered dagger in his hand.
“Willow, I haven’t earned your trust, so I don’t expect you to be willing to explain any of this.” He shrugs and turns his attention to the destruction around us.
I glare at his profile. Is he really going to respect my privacynow?I was a mother-fuckingbadassand yet he can remain tight lipped? I’m torn between feeling appreciative and annoyed. I don’thaveto tell him anything.
But I have a feeling this isn’t the last time I’ll have to unleash my wild side. And I’m sure Viktor will tell Theo about how eager Fredrick was to get ahold of me for my non-necromancing abilities. I might as well get ahead of it while I hold the narrative.
“Well, tonight is your lucky night, Theo,” I tell him.
“Oh? And why is that?” Theo doesn’t turn around to face me as he searches the street for something. Probably some sort of transportation he can steal.
“Because tonight I’m going to tell you everything.”
Thisgains his attention. Theo’s head whips around, and our eyes meet.
“No, Willow—” Jonah starts, but I shake my head.
“Viktor and I learned a lot tonight, Jonah. I have a new enemy, and I have a feeling that to stop him, I’m going to have to stop hiding what I am.” I look from Jonah to the others. “I think it’s fair to assume killing me is now off the table since we tried that and none of us were a real fan of the outcome?”
“Never again,” Theo vows solemnly, his eyes locked onto me with an intense interest.
I look over to Viktor next, who doesn’t look at me but nods. When my gaze lands on Kwil, he stiffens.
“I promised you, you’ll be safe in my arms.” He steps towards me and wraps said arms around my shoulders before pressing a kiss to my forehead.
I don’t know if I can trust these guys completely. Confessing my secrets to these ex-Ghosts could be a huge mistake and end with bloodshed. But do I have the choice to hide my secrets anymore? I don’t think so.
Theo’s head tilts slightly as he studies me. “Why does the thought of you finally willing to share your secrets with us scare me more than what I just saw?”
I chuckle. The sound comes out twisted and dark. Just like I am.
“Because talking about Death makes most people a little nervous.”
Chapter9
THEODON
We leave the area before the police and fire trucks arrive.
Getting back to the Windom Estate proves a bit harder with five people who look worse for wear. Thankfully, Willow manages to flag down a taxi a few blocks away, which offers to take us back. The car ride is filled with tense silence. My heart won’t slow down as I replay the events of the evening. All of which should have been impossible.
And yet Willow wielded Death Magic like it was nothing.
