“How is it that you see the future, then?” Eleanor tilted her head.

“I don’t.” Eleanor’s eyes grew wide before blinking, and with a hesitant look at Garrett, she continued. “I see people’s minds.”

“You’re a seer?” Eleanor asked excitedly as she sat up straighter and set her coffee down.

Crap. Now she had done it.

“Yes. I… Well, Chuck… Um… what I mean…” she stuttered out.

How did she explain all this?

“Shh,” Garrett soothed, moving his chair closer so that their thighs were touching, and his arm was wrapped tighter around her. “We are not judging.”

“He’s right, you know. We all have a past. Someday I’ll tell you how I used to work for the mafia.”

“What?”

She felt as if she had stumbled down a hole in wonderland.

“It was a dark time for me, but it taught me to appreciate everything I have, and it also taught me that I wanted to help people.” There was a look in Eleanor’s eyes, as if she was trying to convey something more than just her story, and she nodded, even if she didn’t completely understand.

“Yes, I’m a seer,” she said. “When I touch someone, I can see into their mind. Sometimes that means I can see the mind of people they have touched as well, but not always. Mostly, I can walk through their thoughts and see whatever they have seen.” She glanced out of the corner of her eye up at Garrett, but he simply met her stare. His fingers continued to rub back and forth over her shoulder.

For the first time ever, she wished that she were touching him.

“Do you trance them?”

“No,” she answered, not knowing what that was. “From what I can tell, they don’t know I’m in their minds. Sometimes they get impatient.”

“Fascinating! Can you stop it?” She shook her head. “Oh, that must be terribly overwhelming sometimes.” Eleanor was a very perceptive woman.

Garrett still hadn’t moved his arm, and she felt a little of her unease fade away.

He didn’t seem to be bothered by her at all.

“You don’t see with my grandson?” Eleanor’s eyes were bouncing between her and Garrett.

“No. Well, I did the first time.” She looked up to him again. “But not all the time.” She decided not to mention about the warmth and peace that she seemed to feel from his touch.

She didn’t even know what to make of it yet.

“Hmm. Can you do it, please? I’d like to watch.” She hesitated, but Garrett smiled and trustingly held his other hand out to her.

“Are you sure?”

“I have nothing to hide from you, little one.” She blushed before grabbing his hand.

This time the warmth was quicker to spread, but an image slid through her mind as well of them in bed the night before.

It was as if she was standing in the room, watching them. He was on his back, staring down at her with a peaceful look on his face as she slept on his chest.

That look made her feel something she didn’t know she could.

Something that felt dangerously close to love.

She couldn’t be in love already, could she?

If she was able to walk his mind, maybe she should use it to her advantage. Maybe she could find out if he really was as trustworthy as he seemed.
