“About time,” Agent Robert quipped, and Mercy blushed, looking like she wanted to elbow him again.
“Fucker,” he muttered.
He wouldn’t say that Robert was a friend, but he was close to one.
“What’s up?” he asked, wrapping his arm around Mercy as she leaned into him. Robert gave him a look and he smirked.
He knew that Roberts wouldn’t hesitate to jump at a chance with Mercy. The man could hardly keep his eyes to himself, and he was more than a little happy to rub it in that she didn’t even look twice at him like that.
Let the fucker suck on that.
“Your grandmother is helping me with a case, and we were hoping…” Robert trailed off, eyeing Mercy.
“We are hoping you can help,” his grandmother finished, walking into the room with a tray with coffee service set up on it.
“Me?” Mercy squeaked, her eyes wide.
Fuck, she was cute.
“Yes, dear.” Eleanor smiled reassuringly.
“Of course. What do you need?” Mercy was practically jumping in place next to him. He pulled her in front of him with his arms still around her so that he could hold her better.
“Can you access people through others?” Robert quipped, and he frowned.
He didn’t like anybody knowing about her gift.
“I told him.” Eleanor gave him a look, and he turned his frown on her.
“You should have talked to me.”
“You mean, Mercy.” Eleanor stared him down.
Fuck.
Crazy old bat.
“Fine. Us. You should have asked us.” He rolled his eyes.
“You would have said yes.” God, he really disliked her sometimes.
She smirked, as if she knew what he was thinking.
“I don’t…” he started to say, but Mercy butted in.
“It’s fine.” Now he was frowning at her. Or trying to, since it wasn’t as easy with her, and he softened, melting.
He really was a goner.
“I don’t want people taking advantage of you.”
“And I don’t mind helping.” He could tell that he wasn’t going to win this one.
“You know when I said I couldn’t wait till you came out of your shell? Well, I wasn’t expecting it the next morning.” She smiled at him with a twinkle in her eye, and a warmth spread through him.
He had given her that smile.
Fuck.
